  1. > Pressure from Washington could lead the UK government to climb down on its demand that Apple provide British law enforcement agencies with backdoor access to encrypted customer data, it has been reported.

    > The Financial Times reports that UK government sources believe pressure from Washington, including the US vice-president, JD Vance, means the Home Office is facing a climbdown.

    > The FT quoted one Whitehall source saying: “The Home Office is basically going to have to back down” and another stating: “They are working on a way around it now.”

Something positive from the Trump administration. This will most likely lead to collapse of the whole law.

  2. I’m glad Apple hasn’t backed down on this, gubmint has no business fucking around with people’s encrypted data.

Usually when we try to oppose government overreach, and the right to secure our own data and communications, we end up having people ask what we’ve got to hide, and arguments about protecting the kids, how we must be paedophiles, or nonce-apologists, etc, so it’s nice to see this argument being leant legitimacy by…The Trump Administration. Ah.

The online safety bill is an absolute incoherent mess. None of them seem to realise the can of worms they’ve opened.

This is a very bizarre situation where JD Vance, who is probably thought of as a fascist among most of parliament at dinner parties, is protecting Brit privacy and free speech better than Labour or the Conservatives would.

  6. I mean what do they even pay MI5 / GCHQ for if they need to use a court order to look at my phone. It’s fucking embarrassing for the spooks.

They want online security by denying everyone the best security that way we can catch the p*dos. It’s like saying no one should lock their doors so police can easily get in…

If it backs down it means they have found a way around or Apple have supplied it on the QT

They want access to everything digital and they will get it one way or another.

I thought we were getting a change of govt last year. Looks like more of the same to me.

Bad will and incompetence seem to be ingrained in our politics

  11. Lmao Vance said we’ll give FVEY’s the vulnerabilities just keep ur mouths shut.

I’ve always been critical of the Online Safety Bill and it was the main reason that I didn’t vote for Labour because they felt like the Tory version didn’t go far enough.

I’m glad that they’re backing down this, although it’s a surprise considering how authoritarian Starmer is, you’d think he’d jump at the chance to go full autocrat by demanding back door access to the lives of innocent people like it’s fucking 1984.
