>“I think it’s simpler said than done,” Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall responded, adding, “On the one hand, there needs to be some pressure to put on the Democrats to come to the table and do something.”
>Marshall, who is also an obstetrician-gynecologist, said he had a “lot of concern” about the SNAP and WIC program. He observed, “**It is very important to my practice. Lots of pregnant women, breastfeeding women use that program as well. I think it’s a good pressure point for them.”**
This is a wild thing to admit, dude. “I’m a doctor so I know that making pregnant women suffer is going to be a really effective political lever for me.”

Food aid isn’t supposed to be at wish during a shutdown, Trump is just illegally withholding the funding that would otherwise go to it, because he doesn’t care if people live or die.
ArchdukeToes on
Backing down would be the worst thing that the Democrats could do. If they agreed with the Republican demands to lift the shutdown then the Republicans would waste no time on blaming the costs of rising healthcare on them amongst everything else.
The Trump cultists are a lost cause, but ‘the Republicans cut your food stamps while splurging on Argentina and Trump’s ballroom’ is an excellent attack line for independent voters at the midterms.

Conservatives never believed in public governance. For them, everything has to be private. Trump only had to pick 20 misfits to destroy quickly the federal government. “Communist” China has an easy time defeating the U.S. with its weak government, a bankrupt government in fact, bankrupt morally and economically.

On Friday I brought a couple armloads of non-perishable ready-to-eat food to my son’s Pre-K teacher in case she (or her fellow teachers) have any kids in the grade with food insecurity, lunchboxes not sufficient, etc. She was thrilled about it.
If you have kids or friends that teach and are able to help out, check with them to see if they have storage in their classrooms and if they’re willing to keep some food on hand for kids in need. A lot of teachers are doing this independently, spending chunks of their salaries to help out their students. They already do so much on their own to compensate for inadequate funding and have such big hearts that they would go broke to keep their students from going hungry.
See if the teachers you know could put some snacks to use. Veggie straws, raisins, cracker packs, etc. in single-serving packages might not be as healthy as fresh produce, but it could make the difference between a kid eating or not. Any port in a storm is better than the alternative; making a small difference is better than nothing.

If you aren’t aware, Rachel Maddow did an interesting bit on why they aren’t changing this. Insurance premiums could rise to between $15,000-$25,000 per month for a family of four making between $85k-$110k (in household income) depending on the state. You do that and that is going to entirely stall the economy. No one will be able to buy extracurricular activities *at all* in many situations, which will absolutely annihilate entire industries.
There needs to be a greater effort to make this distinction clear to those being blatantly lied to on Fox News. They are saying they’re not even cutting funding to food insecurity programs, giving tax breaks to Americans when it’s really only the top 5%, and that democrats are voting to give illegal immigrants health insurance when that’s not even legal. One side can lie constantly, while the other is doing a poor job of emphasizing the truth.
