Am totally uninterested in an American take on this one.
Nothing more cringe than our fellow Aussies at the moment who have been shrieking and crying all year about America being a “dictatorship” and “fascist” and “collapsing” when we just banned public assembly, are scrambling to further limit civil liberties and have leaders openly against free speech. If anywhere is a fascist nanny state it’s Australia.
Goes to show the power of misinformation and fake news.
This article is not written for us. This article is written for an American audience who will shake their heads and tut at the thought of free speech being curtailed.
It’d be great if the USA could keep their cake hole shut about other countries. They’re far from free. The place is backward af.
Americans should worry less about us and more about their wannabe fascist dictator in the White House.
The same Washington Post that has now decreed opinion pages are all about free markets. That Washington Post.
Yeah. Because “free speech” is doing such a good job of protecting people in the US right now. You know you now have to supply a DNA sample at customs on arrival and hand over your phone, on lock it, and if there’s anything negative on Trump in you socials posts they deny you entry. I’ll take hate speech laws over that shit any day.
The WaPo did very little to oppose a far-right populist and authoritarian-leaning government from being elected in the US. I don’t think their opinion on individual freedoms in Australia is worth much.
It will help stem the pervasive feeling of danger and dread in the Jewish community. So on that basis i support it. But, if it’s mishandled and used as to stifle legitimate protest, it could actually shift frustrations exercised through speech to acts of vandalism and violence.
A bit rich coming from the Washington Post, which sabotages pieces critical of the regime at the behest of their billionaire owner.
Once upon a time I admired WaPo. No longer.
