Fifty-five years later, President Donald Trump’s EPA has all but [dropped “Environmental Protection”](https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2025-07-25/epa-s-climate-neglect-doesn-t-have-to-be-permanent) from its name, thus fulfilling yet another prophecy of the satirical news site [The Onion](https://theonion.com/epa-to-drop-e-p-from-name-1819567767/) and also the Heritage Foundation’s [Project 2025](https://www.law.berkeley.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Index-and-Summary-Annotated-of-Project-2025-Report-Aug1424.pdf). The latter might sometimes read like bleak satire, but it’s actually a deadly serious playbook for dismantling the regulatory state to make life easier and more lucrative for polluters of all kinds, especially the fossil-fuel companies whose products are heating the planet.
