there was never any question that he would do it given the ever increasing calls to have one from all sections of the country.
if he didn’t it wouldn’t have gone well for him.

Anyway after this political shitshow is over, can we have a Royal Commission into the disgraceful behaviour of commercial media, who have used this event to push an agenda, while somehow managing to not report the fact that a RC at this time has a very high risk of interfering with a court trial?

If we are gonna do this we should rope together all the cooker ideologies into it like the sovcits and white nationalists

no fan of Albo, but he shouldn’t of bent the knee too the media. Looking forward to everyone calling for a RC dismiss the finding because it doesn’t say what they think is right, the report will come out 2032-2033

It’s the right thing to do and good on him.
This isn’t about Palestine vs Israel, or Team Red vs Team Blue. Which I know to some, all they are thinking about is if damning findings are possibly made against their favourite ~~sports~~ political team.
This is the worst terrorist attack on our soil and we need a comprehensive deep dive into why it happened and how we can do our best to make sure it never happens again. Not dismiss it as a waste of time and money. Have some empathy – if you were a family member of one of the 15 people who were murdered, its completely understandable they want the strongest level of scrutiny and answers.
EDIT – I want to also say I’m more impressed than I thought with the terms of reference. It’s very wide and I believe with what’s been announced we can really take that deep dive in.

Key info:
It will a RC into into antisemitism and social cohesion
Former High Court justice Virginia Bell will lead the RC
It will cover four key areas, including:
* Tackling antisemitism by investigating its nature, prevalence and key drivers, including “religious and motivated extremism and radicalisation”.
* Making any recommendations to enforcement, border immigration and security agencies to tackle antisemitism
* Examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged Bondi terrorist attack
* Making any other recommendations to strengthen social cohesion and counter the spread of “ideological and religiously motivated extremism in Australia”.
Interim report due by April 2026, with a full report by December 14, 2026

Lol so all headlines are wrong. It is NOT a RC into the Bondi attack.
It is a RC into “antisemitism and social cohesion” (wokeism).

WTF is “motivated extremism”. He just made up a word that has no meaning because he is too pussy to say radical Islamic terrorism.

Should have done it ASAP or not at all.
Watch as him and Labor will still get attacked for it, because:
* the head of the RC is the wrong person for never stated reasons
* the scope is too narrow (watch how when the scope does change, the demands of the scope will also change)
* it was always too late
* the LNP didn’t get any say in the details officially, or some other nonsense
Betting that Josh Frydenberg is rushing to find the nearest TV camera as we speak…

Why is this getting down voted so hard. Anti-semites not happy that they may be called out for what they are?
__dontpanic__ on
Hearing from some media contacts that there is a push from the Jewish community (not sure which parts of it) for terms of reference to look at who is funding the pro-Palestine movement. Already looking like this is less about antisemitism and will just be a vehicle for pro Israeli interests.

Blows my mind that people are condemning this so hard, seems perfectly valid and we spend much more money on much worse things.
If it exposes any key systemic failings then it’s worth it…but I’ve learned long ago to give up trying to understand the reddit hivemind at this point.

The Honourable Virginia Bell AC is a highly respected former High Court Judge with an illustrious career in our justice system. This is a sensible decision, combined with a reasonable TOR and timeline.
The comprehensive response now includes a Federal RC, NSW state RC, the Independent Review led by Dennis Richardson AC, legislative hate speech reform, & legislative gun law reform.

Sorry but I find the persistent questioning about how it took 25 days and some ads for the Cth RC to be called so completely disingenuous and facile. Several royal commissions take several years to call. Robodebt, aged care, child abuse, stolen generations — ffs fucking bushfires in 2019/2020 took a few weeks/months to get up and there were several deaths directly associated with that.
This is the beginning of a narrative about how unfair the very genesis of this RC is and it’s absolutely nauseating. It took too long, we hate the commissioner, why is there only one commissioner. Soon I expect “why is it taking so long” and “why is it being rushed” to ring out simultaneously.

Stop blaming foreigners. Islamist terrorism is already endemic in Australia, you don’t need to find other people to point a finger at because we already know the origin.

I’ve said before that this is unlikely to accomplish anything, and I maintain that, but symbolism is important and this is what the Jewish community wanted to feel heard and so its worth it.

The opposition/critics will just move on to the next thing now. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them demand that the CSG be allowed to carry guns, or reversing the decision to recognise Palestine. There is no satisfying them.

Reading social media the goalposts have moved, because the average facebook user seems to think this is a trial not a commission and so appointing Bell is choosing the judge and jury, or something.

We need a RC to investigate the causes of antisemitism? Not like it hasn’t been a thing for close to a century globally right? Apparently we need a RC to understand slaughtering tenths of thousands of innocent people causes an angry reaction.

I have a question regarding travel arrangements for people being summoned and who pays for their travel. For example if a radical university activist group leader in say Perth or a religious extremist in Melbourne is summoned to a hearing in Canberra or Sydney, who pays for the flight tickets and accommodation? Are the individuals expected to pay up themselves or does the taxpayer pay for it? Is there a threshold for video appearances vs physical appearances?
If prospective people of interest decide to fly overseas to escape this, is there any extradition-like mechanism exisiting that allows Australia to force them to fly back and appear at the hearing?

I am owed a massive, massive apology. I called it from the moment it happened. What an embarrassing moment for the government and the ALP sycophants that came up with every cooker take under the sun to justify not having a RC after the worst terrorist attack on our soil in history that was explicitly warned about and occured against a backdrop of antisemitic attacks and hate ravaging our cities for two plus years.
I’m just thankful the right and obvious decision has finally been made.
