Good, but it’s just kicking the can further at this point. They are going to eventually need to rise and Reeves needs to plan for that.

Business rates are a joke, tying taxes to rent when rent isn’t proportional to a businesses profits.
My local Timpson shop is tiny and the rates on the unit are 10k a year… That’s a lot of keys to cut.

Business rates are the single most important issue in preventing growth.
It must be abolished.

Look at Paris and how many amazing little shops there are, then look at London. Business rates have destroyed the high street.

Rates actively stop growth. They’re calculated bizarrely. Would honestly prefer a rise in corp tax so it’s at least linked to actual profit.

A major issue with Labour is they have absolutely no solid long term plan, or determination to stick to their guns.
And their own MP’s constantly work against them with absolutely no sense of authority or autocracy from above that you see with right leaning parties.
Major u-turns so far include the child benefit cap, farmers inheritance tax, planned income tax rise, and now the business rates.
If you’re going to announce deeply unpopular changes for the greater good, at least stick with them.

I was wondering what this weeks U-turn was going to be.
*The chancellor is set for another major U-turn after coming under pressure from Labour MPs*
Banning Labour MPs from pubs seems to work then.

She had no choice after Tom Carriage, the chef, trended in the mainstream news about his terrible the new taxes are.

Is this only for pubs? But not restaurants or other businesses that are even more important? I cannot believe the energy going into ~~Andy Murray~~ pubs.
Ridiculous pandering execution, so if hotels or restaurants kick up a fuss they get exemptions too? But nobody else in the industry? Then where’s the money coming from? Us right?
Look I am glad they are listening to concerns, and this is more a reverse of covid era relief, but the execution here is just off to me. Business rates are awful but making an exception just for pubs and not wider is just a joke honestly.

I don’t think this is a u turn at all on their part lol these are covid era business rate reliefs that were due to expire. All reeves has done is increase the length.
