  1. I appreciate her statement. I don’t think the US will ignore Taiwan crisis either because Guam is a neighbour of Japan & Taiwan, and the Silicon Shield is so important to the world.

  2. Japan’s own security would be in great danger if it ignores an invasion of Taiwan. If China takes over Taiwan, Japan is next. It is in Japan’s best interest to protect Taiwan.

  3. A lot of people don’t realize how closely aligned Taiwan is to Japan.

The Japanese colonized Taiwan for 50 years, and it was one of the few (maybe the only) successfully-integrated colony, perhaps because it was governed by a proper colonial administration and not the military. The Japanese administration contributed greatly to the infrastructure of Taiwan, many structures still being used today.

As a result, many of the older generation of Taiwanese remember Japanese rule fondly and still speak some Japanese and have Japanese friends (schools in Taiwan were integrated which contributed greatly to this rapport). Culturally, many Taiwanese sleep on futons and have adopted many Japanese customs.

So it’s not mentioned too loudly, but many indigenous Taiwanese would in fact want to be part of Japan. They certainly don’t consider themselves to be part of the mainland.
