This is a good move by Ley and Libs.

Let the Nats sit on the back/cross benches shouting at the clouds.

This also gives the Libs time to get their own house in order.

    “Good” being relative.

well if this is happening, it seems increasingly likely this split will be long term, if they are announcing a new frontbench

Yes, get a climate/energy policy and get one or two of the teals into the party like Spender or Stegall (I don’t know which one is most likely to come). Then they can be economic progressive social conservatives or something like that.

  4. Probably a good move but critically this will be her big chance to prove libs can change for the times.

    I doubt it will happen

  5. This is the best outcome for her, and the Liberals.

    She can rebuild the brand.

She has better internal security, with fewer knives at her back and having to negotiate with a party with different values.

The Liberals can concentrate on urban electorates unhindered by rural concerns.

In other words, a fresh start for the Liberals. More time for her to focus on leading *her* party.

Further, a coalition during periods of opposition are an oddity in the world. Usually, coalitions form *after* elections. There’s absolutely nothing stopping the parties getting together again if they get enough seats in the future.

  6. Get ready for “Tony Abbott as minister for women”
Type of appointments…. There isn’t much in the talent pool if it’s just the Liberals

It also comes down to that age old decision of whether to back a giant douche or a turd sandwich…..hence Ley will very likely keep her job.
