Israel is a country that has many shared norms and values with Australian democracy and we have a small but important relationship with them particularly in the areas of security, intelligence and innovation in many areas including medical technology. The President of Israel is always welcome in Australia.

  2. Why would we invite an individual that is likely to increase tensions even further, Herzog has no purpose in Australia.

    Rescind the invitation.

  3. Albo seems to be making one poor decision after another against the wishes of the majority of Australians, starting with a refusal to lift all Australians out of below poverty, followed by the disastrous pushing of “The Voice” onto the public, his arrogant obstinacy over housing, the debacle over the Bondi terrorism response and now inviting further division and poor judgement in inviting the Israeli president to the Bondi aftermath.

Time to give Albo the elbow?

It genuinely seems like Albo got spooked by the Newscorp BS about how the attack happened because he was mean to Israel and recognised Palestine, and this was why he invited Herzog.

It was a bad move. The terrorists targeted Australian Jews because they were Jewish, not because they were Israeli, and Australian Jews are Australian. This was an Australian tragedy not Israel’s. They didn’t blow up the Israeli embassy, they didn’t attack Israeli tourists specifically.

i don’t think we should be inviting any member of the Israeli government, but that is also well beyond my power to do anything about, all i can say is that he better be prepared for people to show up if he is known to be in any public location ahead of time

Undoubtedly the visit will heat up tensions. But, like it or not, this was the worst terrorist attack on Australian soil and Jewish people were the target. It’s fair enough to invite a representative from the Jewish state in the wake of such an atrocity. It sends a powerful message that Australia is aggrieved by the event but not ashamed as the pro-Israelis want us to be.

It’s also fair enough to demonstrate against the visit or demand the invitation be withdrawn. It’s not like we don’t know what’s going on in Palestine. But purity politics creates a circular firing squad and sometimes you need to show unity with a political frenemy because the atrocity was too close and too horrific to do anything else.

Well he has to be seen to do something. It’s better to receive the President than deal with the difficulty of having to make the decision to detain Netanyahu as soon as he touches Australian soil.

  8. If there was a terrorist attack that targeted Catholics. I’d expect the Pope. I’m not sure I would expect the President of Italy.

  9. When he was literally calling for unity a few days ago on the Bondi memorial day, how can he then turn around and invite such a divisive figure.

Stop pandering to a minority segment of population and actually act on unity as you are trying to preach.
