And begs the question: is US economic policy directed at Canada designed to stoke separatist sentiment throughout the country?

I do think it’s a real problem. I expect US improper influence, including bribing Albertans. He tried it already in Greenland. I know support for separation right now is like 18%, but if he was offering $20K per resident of Alberta if separation happens I think that could go way up.

Not going to happen. Alberta crown land becomes federal lands in the U.S. That means the federal government will run oil leases and collect royalties on oil.

Rather than get caught up in the melodrama and hype, take a moment to reflect on the fact that Albertan sovereignty is a *marginal view* that is rejected by the lion’s share of the population.
I’m not diminishing the threat of foreign power funking up our shite, but we should recognize they’re fanning the flames of something we might generously call an ember.
In Internet-Alberta it feels like sovereignty is a vital movement. In real-life Alberta it’s a bit different.

I think this really reflects the times that we live in. Increasingly, people see their partisan alignment as their primary identity, even over things like religion and nationality. MAGA Canadians want to be ruled by a MAGA government, the same way that some US states discuss joining Canada whenever a Republican holds the White House.
But I think, like US states joining Canada, this is really just ideation. The current polls show Wexit losing 80-20. It certainly creates a spectacle, but that’s all it seems likely to accomplish.

Trump should be worried about keeping California. Support for California separating from the United States, Calexit, has increased from 29% of Californians in Feb 2025 to 44% in June 2025. Gee, I wonder why?
And yet these poll results aren’t played up in the American media as an existential threat to the future of the US.. Again, one wonders why (not really).

I actually feel bad for how stupid these people are to think they are going to prosper by selling themselves to a con artist.

Its really important to understand how dumb albertans are. Every sane country nationalized its oil, when trudeau sr tried to do it those morons kicked up a fuss and ended up scuttling it. Norway started a sovereign wealth fund off its oil revenues thats worth over a trillion dollars and they never have to worry about funding their welfare state ever again. meanwhile all alberta has to show for decades of turning its landscape into the first half of a captain planet episode before the villains are foiled is systematic dismantling of public services, and they like it that way and want more of it

Nightmare scenario:
– Foreign interference in referendum
– Yes win or close no (if no declare voting irregularities)
– Separatists ignore Clarity Act and make a unilateral Declaration of Independence (à la Parizeau)
– Canada gets pissed
– US sends “peacekeeping force” to keep Canada out
– US declares Alberta an “independent” protectorate
– US formalizes territory status

Why would the First Nations that live there are going to let that happen?
And Alberta wouldn’t be treated as a state. They’ll be treated like a territory like Puerto Rico and exploited for resources because since has Trump ever honoured his deals?
