Push for retailers to play role in 3D-printed gun crackdown after Bondi attack

  1. I have several points that I can see here.

    * The printed parts of the guns shown in this article could be made just as easily by a half-way competent amateur woodworker. They might be rougher, and not look as good, but they would be just as functional.
    * The guys printing these guns still need properly made barrels and actions, items that are readily available to licensed gun owners, and therefore just as available to criminals. Any competent fitter and turner can make them.
    * If they ban the printing of parts, where do they draw the line? Why should i be stopped from printing a pair of grips for my legally owned revolver if I need to? Someone with small hands, or large hands, can have problems getting grips to fit. Printing them is a cheap way to either get a finished product or to prototype before getting the hardwood and the chisels out.

To be honest I think the gun community is moving on from the plastic 3D printed firearms that became popular in the 2010s. Unfortunately the reason for that is that the [cost of CNC routers](https://shariffdmc.com/product/dmc2-cnc/) has steadily fallen into the zone that hobbyists can easily afford so now they can just make a metal one at home.

    > Gun control groups are pushing for more laws that ban the importation of 3D printers if they do not have pre-installed software blocking firearm parts from being manufactured.

I am willing to entertain the possibility of a lot of whacky technical “solutions” to a great man “problems”. And I can often see how they might be achievable.

But an “embedded gun component detector”? I’m genuinely curious how they propose that works. Because anything I can come up with has truly significant downsides (if it works at all).

  4. A couple of lengths of PVC pipe can be turned into a spud cannon. Obviously we should be cracking down on these dangerous plumbing supplies.

    Guns are ancient tech.

I could make a gun with a ballpoint pen and a box of matches.

And yes it would be deadly.

I’d never do that because I’m not a criminal.

But man I could make some awesome guns with a trip to bunnings. No joke. Seriously powerful weapons.

Complete waste of time and tax payers money to try and somehow come up with laws to get around this. Just becomes bureaucratic red tape for law abiding purposes.

Illegal firearm straight to jail. 10 years. Just keep it simple.
