Mark Carney and Stephen Harper are both ‘the smartest guy in the room’ — and that’s not all they have in common

  1. I can’t read the article because of paywall. However, if Carney and Harper have things in common that is honestly fine. They both tacked towards the centre of their respective parties and are both competent. Harper was a more divisive figure at the end but in hindsight that was overblown. Harper at least knew how to talk to moderates in Ontario unlike these current Reform descendants running the Conservatives.

That said, very happy with my vote for Carney right now. I think his policies are what the country needs, it’s good that the Liberal Party has moved on from Trudeau back to the centre, and he seems to be palatable from coast to coast. This last point is very important as we approach two possible referendums in Alberta and Quebec.

If we still had Trudeau, I think you could get an Alberta yes vote. Similarly, if we had Polievre I think we could get a Quebec yes vote.

Like him or hate him Harper is intelligent and good at politics. His protèges Poilievre and Scheer aren’t living up to what he built up and it’s very obvious.

Harper was an isolationist, a Trump-lite. I do not recall Harper jet setting around the world signing new deals with everyone.

NGL I like Harper among this chaos. He’s actually been like “I wouldn’t put up with this either and I’m very US leaning”

TBH I think former PMs should communicate to each other especially across party lines. There’s only so many living PM’s in the world and that is a trove of knowledge & experience current PM’s should tap into.

Harper wanted to deregulate banking before the 2008 housing crash. The only reason why he couldn’t is because he did not have enough time to do so before the crash had happened. Had he won early or crash happened later we would have been fucked. The only thing that saved us that the Liberals were in power until 06.

Harper and the IDU have backed both trump and the republican party. This is has led to a increase to the global alt right. We can all see the results.

Harper in the 2nd worst pm in history right behind Mulroney, the only reason why he is not viewed in that light is because our media has been captured by American conservatives

Regardless of your politics, at least with Carney and Harper most people could feel that we have one of the sharpest / most capable people our country has to offer in charge. I didn’t feel this way when JT was PM.

  7. Harper never seemed that smart to me, but rather an ideologue with the ability seem softer than he was. Carney actually does seem smart (and capable).

  8. Harper sold off the wheat board and gave Canada away to the highest bidder.

Harper took Canada out of the Kyoto Protocol, he weakened pollution regulations.

He muzzled scientists (pesky facts ruining his agenda?).

He had a bunch of ethical controversies, limited debate in parliament, prorogued parliament.

He made it harder to get information from the gov on purpose.

Made it harder for people to access EI

Anyone remember the robocall scandal?! He deliberately sent out fake polling stations to divert opposition voters away from real polling stations

Over a billion dollars disappeared with his gov and noone knows where it went.

Harper is as evil as Trump but he wasnt loud about it. He was the worst PM weve had in recent memory.
