  1. One of the things that I do like is increased focus by the government in improving basic elements of administration.

  2. As the article points out, CBSA ALREADY HAS THIS CAPABILITY. It is disappointing the immigration minister does not know this. I believe the CBSA rolled this out around 2018-19.

This would be basic common sense, yes. If someone’s entire entry to Canada is conditional on the expectation that they’d leave, we should probably be tracking their exits as well.

You could even look at rules suggesting that people who overstay their visas (without using approved extension processes) would be barred from permanent residency in the future. It would create an incentive for people to actually leave the country on time if they have aspirations of living in Canada long-term eventually.

It’s insane that we don’t already ensure temporary residents are leaving when they’re supposed to.

If they haven’t left by the date they’re required to, we should send someone to their last known address to deport them.

  5. I want everyone to think about how this would *actually* be accomplished. You would require *exit* controls across the Canadian border, something we have never implemented at scale, because it is commonly understood to be a tool used by repressive regimes.

Yes, when you enter another country, they have *entry* controls, as is their right. But when a country tries to keep its people from leaving, that’s fundamentally repressive.

Do you want to have to explain to a Canadian border agent, armed with weapons, that you have a “good reason” every time you try and go on vacation or a business trip? Every time you try and take money out of the country?
