It goes without saying that legalising Cannabis and taxing it would raise so much revenue. Even the USA which has gone off the Fascist deep end is more progressive than the supposedly centre-left Starmer on this. Why?

This is all being framed in a pretty underhand way.

The cost of alcohol was already going up anyway due to inflation and, due to that, so was the tax take. Tax paid was already going up due to inflation. This is just increasing taxes. Framing a tax increase as RPI related is intentionally misleading.

When you combine this with the special treatment pubs have received (being given 15% off business rates while hotels and restaurants haven’t), it gives a very muddled picture of Labour’s attitude towards alcohol. It’s as if the government likes the general idea of pubs but not what they actually sell.
