I know I shouldn’t expect logical consistency from Danielle Smith but having to listen to her spout nonsense at the First Minister’s Meeting regarding Alberta separatism has just inflamed my disgust and lowered (my already incredibly low) opinion of her intelligence.
She screams stay in your lane to the feds when it comes to resources and then thinks she can trample over the constitutional framework that gives the federal government power over judicial appointments.
She is one of the worst examples of modern conservatism and maybe the most morally bankrupt person to ever sit in a First Minister’s chair.

Seems US advisors Smith has – don’t realize Canada has a different constitution and legal system. They also advisors her months ago – that she had pardon powers, as do governors in the US…

Aren’t federally-appointed judges already paid by the federal government? What funding is she planning to withhold?
Also, what “distinct legal traditions” does Alberta have? She also brings up bilingualism as a barrier, but I am fairly certain anyone who can get through law school can learn French.

This corrupt, American, hack judge picking nonsense is being driven by the same base who were demanding pardons from the Alberta premier for breaking covid restrictions. Not realizing that the premier doesn’t have pardon powers because ITS NOT THE US.

You gotta love those complaining about the federal government being a “tyrant” when they are the ones trying to destroy democracy by removing the independence of parts of our society because these parts are not necessarily agreeing with them.
I think Albertans should start getting out in the streets because their government is falling into a mini-authoritarian state.

Alberta has 3 of the 7 seats on the [Federal Judicial Advisory Committee for Alberta](https://www.fja.gc.ca/appointments-nominations/committees-comites/members-membres/mem-ab-eng.html) – 2 from the Law Society of Alberta, and a direct political appointee in the form of [Sandra Hawes, KC](https://www.millerthomson.com/en/your-team/sandra-l-hawes/)
Whenever Alberta asks for something, I wonder if Quebec has it already?
And if Quebec doesn’t have this power already they’re probably kicking themselves for not demanding it previously.
