Last century, before drones and other weaponry, you could have held on to Kharg Island and the strait for a little while. The last truly successful attack was by the Portuguese in 1500s and then Persians a hundred years later.
The main problem is that toward the Omani side the territory is really rocky and formations with some altitude can be used to attack lower ground easily.
If our troops stage on the Oman side they are technically on a very narrow strip of land that can be hit with basic artillery.

Just to add context here, as was the case with the same news a few days ago (Marines heading to the gulf!), don’t look into it as much as (some of) you are
Both MEUs, even combined,,aren’t very large. So the idea they are going to land anywhere is small (but the airborne could be used as well, so who knows).
My point being, both MEUs have a little over 2K Marines aboard. Of those only a little over 500 are what you are thinking as Marines. The rest support those Marines (via the air wing, tracks, mechanics etc).
Combine the two and you still only have around 1000 “Marines” (as far as you view them). That’s still not even a regiment. So the odds this is a sign of what reddit is thinking is extremely small.

Not that I want them to but there’s no way that Iran hasn’t been watching Ukraine and seeing how ruthlessly efficient FPV drones are.
