From the headline my assumption was that he was trying to buy alcohol so if tested later he could claim he drank it after driving rather than before. However it seems he wasn’t really being that sophisticated:

Surprised he got 11 years, it feels like this is an outlier when it comes to sentencing people who kill on the road due to their own negligence. Dickhead should be banned from driving for life as well
