“The job cuts are part of a larger company reorganization.

    ….

The layoffs will also affect employees across Meta’s recruiting, sales, global operations and Facebook social teams. The layoffs across these divisions are unrelated to one another, according to the source.”

If they fire enough people they can bring back the metaverse….

  2. Wonder if this has anything to do with losing the California mental health trial.

This is like the Big Tobacco trial, but for social media. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of cases waiting for this to be resolved before a floodgate of lawsuits comes flying at Meta.

The bellweather trial has found Meta and Youtube guilty. That strikes right at the heart of how they make money, keeping eyes on screens. If they’re forced to break that “addictive algorithm”, eyes on screens goes down, and so does ad revenue.

Gonna be an interesting thing to see if this decision sticks, or if Meta can win on appeal. If they lose, and the algorithm, the endless feed, and all the little “dopamine hits” they’ve engineered in are now considered to be “harmful to human health”, the entire model falls apart. Even Reddit has followed Meta’s lead on this, so a loss for Meta will have repercussions for the entire social media landscape.
