>“The federal election law should be changed to require the party to pay the costs of a byelection when the only reason the byelection is being held is so the party’s leader can have a seat in the House of Commons,” Conacher told CTVNews.ca
So the MP will just say they’re resigning for personal reasons then. There’s no way to enforce this short of barring party leaders from running in by-elections.

When a By-election is held solely to get a leader who lost their seat back in the house – yeah I’m all for the party having to pay for it themselves. There is no reason a single public dollar should go to something like that no matter which party it is. Hell if a PM or Premier lose their seat but the party wins it should still go that way.

In other news, democracy costs money?
He may have lost his riding, but the conservatives still won 41% of the vote. The face of the party that can get that much representation deserves to be in parliament to represent his constituency. No matter how vapid he may be.

Wow it’s not PP byelection..
There are a number of ways a MP can vacate the seat. It’s part of democracy.. there is nothing against it..
To reduce the costs, put fine on the long ballot group for making difficult to manage a election. Just because it’s allowed we can’t have everyone in the region to run for election.. take 20k from each candidate and if they don’t receive enough votes they lose their deposit. Election is funded.. people who win or get enough votes they get their deposit back.
Can CTV also find out how much the byelection will cost us because Christia Freeland is leaving for a foreign job. This article just looks like a hit piece..shame .
