  1. “Maybe the only true test on whether the grid has improved is another massive winter storm”

  2. For anyone interested, there’s an excellent podcast, The Disconnect. Power. Politics. And the Texas Blackout. As an Austinite who lived through it, it was really informative. (spoiler alert: it wasn’t the windmills.)

I can say with 100% confidence that it has been because of the solar and battery build out that pricing volatility has stabilized in Texas. They definitely haven’t been tested by another storm like Uri, but. Solar is drastically changing midday prices which makes batteries cheaper than gas (in some cases) to deploy when needed. Look at summer 2023 vs 2024 pricing.

What’s interesting is now they want to double their load in 10 years with data centers. I’m not sure that’s going to keep a stable grid.

So potentially nothing has really changed. Most of the issue was due to them not winterizing equipment properly and widespread gas freeze offs. Adding more gas power gen capacity won’t fix that.

I agree with that consensus though. The only really way to know if they got it right is when they get another massive winter storm.
