Coal has plenty of uses the only thing killing it is the societal belief that it is bad for the environment, there is no other reason than that.
The same thing happened to CFCs and what did we find out? That there never was an “Ozone Hole” per se, that the thing opens and closes annually. The world lost a low cost refrigerant and excellent fire retardant over faulty science and hysteria.
We are now on track to lose a useful resource, coal. It may not have the highest energy yield as other materials do but it is still useful for energy production and other uses.
