  1. First the DST, then the retaliatory tariffs, now this. If even this doesn’t prove to voters that Carney has sold them out, then nothing will.

    I get its necessary cause our economy is actually dying right now but shit it hurts to read that we keep backing away

I doubt we can get a sustained deal with Trump, but down the road at least it could be worth looking at phasing out our below market stumpage fees since it tends to encourage inefficient industrial practices such as overlogging, lowers provincial government revenue from logging as well as being bad for the environment etc.

    The fees are generally maintained by the provinces as a way to attempt to stimulate the economy of poor/logging-dependent communities, but overall it’s a fairly inefficient policy and if anything probably makes it harder for those communities to diversify/transition etc.

    In the long term removing the below market fees would boost provincial government revenue, reduce overlogging, be better for the environment/biodiversity & would likely prevent similar lumber disputes with the U.S in the future etc.
