Soccer games in Europe have been played in empty stadiums in order to punish fan bases for their bigoted behavior, including monkey chants and throwing batteries at black players. FIFA and CONCACAF have instituted penalty protocols specifically targeting the Mexican national team’s fans for repeatedly using an anti-gay chant.
This kind of behavior is disgusting, but it is not unique to America or a recent phenomenon.
