And recruitment might still be fine in some sectors, but intelligent people are thinking twice before signing up, in a way they wouldn’t have a decade ago. I worked for a major publicly traded company in a pretty senior role (I had ~1,100 employees report up to me in multiple states). We had a new boss come in who reminded me a lot of Pete and most of the current administration. Peter principal (no pun intended) comes to mind, except by a couple levels above incompetence. Anyway, this guy did much the same as Trump and Pete here, demanding loyalty, firing anyone who stood up to him or wouldn’t mindlessly parrot his bullshit, while those of us who survived kept our heads low and tried to root him out. Took a few years but finally his incompetence and bad behavior caught up to him, and he was fired. Years later the scars remain. Culturally, reputationally and in loss of irreplaceable talent and institutional knowledge. I see that experience as a microcosm of what’s happening today, and while as bad as it seems, it gives me hope that eventually the trash will be taken to the curb. And while nothing will ever be the same, it’ll be better than now.
