  1. Nixon is flipping in his grave. If only he’d hung out for another 50 years he’d have loved Trump

  2. [Donald Trump](https://inews.co.uk/topic/donald-trump?ico=in-line_link) may not know much history, but it is clear that Democratic Senator Dick Durbin does.

“What has taken place since January 20th 2025 would make even President Nixon recoil,” he told a congressional hearing on Tuesday.

Richard Nixon famously resigned in 1974 to avoid being impeached amid the Watergate scandal, in which it was revealed the President had directed his administration to spy on and target his political enemies, the media and Hollywood celebrities.

In a famous interview in 1977, Nixon told British broadcaster David Frost that “when the President does it, that means that it is not illegal”.

A half-century later, critics say the actions of Trump during his second term are comparable to or worse than those of Nixon, who died in 1994.

What Nixon did in secret, the current President is doing in plain sight, they add.

Having campaigned to deliver “retribution” against his [enemies](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/how-trump-exploit-us-government-shutdown-target-enemies-3950757?ico=in-line_link) and those of the Maga movement, Trump is using the Department of Justice to target those who have upset him.

These range from former FBI director and [Trump critic James Comey](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/former-fbi-director-james-comey-indicted-as-trump-targets-critics-3939818?ico=in-line_link); New York Attorney General Letitia James who oversaw the investigation into the business of the President and his sons; and Democratic Senator Adam Schiff, who led the prosecution in Trump’s first impeachment trial.

  3. The Republicans party is complicit. They have been corrupted. Nixon’s own party distanced themselves from him, did their job, impeached, and convinced him to leave.

  4. We have had some demon presidents but I really can’t think of anyone so destructive and frankly un-American. Maybe Jackson, which makes sense as to why Trump likes him i guess.

If you combine every scandal from Nixon to President Biden excepting Trump 1, you still do not touch a single Presidential week of the current Presidency.

Unfortunately law is only valid if those in a position of authority have the fortitude to enforce the law. No one is willing to hold trump accountable, therefor his acts are not illegal

And even during Watergate the Republican Party tried to peddle their propaganda about how Democrats made Nixon do it, and really Nixon was the good guy, the big difference is there were no receptive outlets for that bullshit. Rodger Ailes spent the next 30 years building his propaganda machine to correct that while Republican officials started slashing education budgets to prep the audience.
