I have always thought that political leaders should never receive the Nobel Peace Prize, no matter their ideological alignment. The Nobel Peace Prize should be given to civil leaders who demonstrate the value of people’s power outside of politics.
When it’s given to groups that organize outside the political system, like last year’s organization for nuclear disarmament, or people who put their body’s on the line to defend a cause, like Malala, it’s much more earned than a political figure.
Maria Corina Machado is a very controversial pick. Her history as Venezuela’s opposition leader, outside of her political leanings, has been a cult of personality combined with political myth making. There are many people and groups in Venezuela calling for free and fair elections. Corina Machado has celebrated Trump’s assassination of 20 people on a ship in international waters, has called for US intervention and invasion in Venezuela, has supported the Israeli genocide or held offshore accounts in Panama and Miami she didn’t disclose.
People celebrating that Trump didn’t win must know that Trump was never an option and Corina Machado is the closest thing to Trump in Venezuela.
