Republicans have the gall to claim that Democrats are “holding the country hostage” while Trump is issuing ultimatums and threatening Americans with “maximum pain.” He’s trying to bully Democrats into folding by vowing to impose mass layoffs, withhold funds to Democrat run areas, deny backpay to furloughed federal workers, and permanently disrupt government services.
Republicans only tried to push a stopgap CR bill forward at the last minute so they could attempt to control the narrative. Which is made evident by the fact that GOP representatives were absent during key votes on government funding bills earlier in the month.
The CR measure failed because Trump and his GOP lackeys refused to negotiate—up till the very last moment—on rolling back their massive cuts to healthcare for millions of Americans *citizens,* and all while dismissing the reality that healthcare costs for Americans will increase considerably if ACA subsidies are not extended.
It’s worth noting that Democrats could have made far more demands of Republicans when you consider the widespread ramifications of Trump’s other policies and his so-called “big beautiful bill,” but they chose to narrow their focus on healthcare; giving Republicans the opportunity to compromise on a single issue, which they’ve continuously refused to do in their obstinacy.
Instead of cooperating with Democrats to help avert a shutdown, Trump told them to “go fuck themselves” and chose to capitalize off of the situation by threatening to layoff more civil servants, deprive workers of pay and dismantle important government operations—politically charged threats that he knows will affect American livelihoods, including soldier’s.
It certainly sounds like Trump is the one holding the country hostage… But that hasn’t stopped Republicans from trying to distort the facts and mislead the public.
Trump also insisted that a shutdown will benefit him politically, implying that he couldn’t care less about the harm his actions will inflict on Americans, their families and the federal workforce.
But apparently Dems are the villains in this scenario. Go figure…
Trump exploited the inevitability of a shutdown—without any regard for the consequences—to dominate the narrative and blame his political opponents for his own inaction and his petty vindictiveness throughout this whole fiasco.
According to recent polls however, most Americans will hold him and the GOP responsible for this outcome.
The claim that Dems are to blame because they’re demanding that Republicans expand healthcare to “illegals” is an utter myth.
The Dem proposal includes nothing about giving healthcare to immigrants and merely asks that some healthcare cuts affecting *millions of American citizens* be rolled back, and that subsidies be extended so American’s healthcare costs don’t skyrocket.
Republicans have consolidated power throughout every branch of government. Trump cancelled a meeting with top Democrats meant to help prevent a shutdown, telling them to “go f-ck themselves,” But the GOP is trying desperately to control the narrative and point fingers at their political opponents; choosing to focus most of their energy on politicizing this outcome rather than resolve it.
Sadly, their voters have taken the bait…
Over and over again I hear, “Democrats want to spend your hard earned tax dollars on healthcare for undocumented immigrants.” This is right-wing propaganda that has been packaged in many different forms over the years.
The Democrat proposal wants to extend healthcare subsidies and roll back the Medicaid cuts included in Trump’s “big beautiful bill.”
There is nothing in the proposal about offering healthcare to immigrants. In fact, undocumented immigrants are barred from most federally funded healthcare programs.
Democrats are not “shutting down the government because they want to give healthcare to ‘illegals!'” They have only asked Republicans to come to the table to help protect healthcare costs from surging and to rein in their massive cuts to Medicaid that they unanimously decided to deprive millions of Americans of under the guise of some bullshit, scapegoating and xenophobic narrative about immigrants stealing tax dollars. A tired narrative that they’ve relied on so often in the past.

I feel like we need to learn to live in a post-shutdown United States.
If I am being totally honest. I think that our elected representatives need to massively rethink the role of resistance. The great 250 year old tree that is the US government now is rotting from the inside. Doomed to fall.
Congress, the Supreme Court, the executive branch. No longer serve the people. Even the systems in which we participate in electoral politics. The base unit of our democracy has become twisted and compromised. Our elected voices nullified by gerrymandering.
There is a moment in the French Revolution that I think resonates with me most these days.the Tennis Court Oath of 1789.when members of national assembly in France, representative of the people were locked out from their parliament.
In response. Meeting in an indoor Tennis court. Representative of the 3rd estate took a vote not to disband. And to challenge power held by the clergy and nobility.
I think it’s a powerful reminder to look back on, in this age. That our power is not just formed from concrete arches of the halls of Congress. Power is not something granted by a higher authority. But formed by the people who give them, who grant them that authority.
If our voices are barred from the halls of Congress. Fine, just as the French did, we will meet at our own proverbial tennis courts.
