Every part of that deal is an insult. Buying beef from them is going to be a huge mess because Argentinian beef isn’t harvested to the same standards as the USDA requires and is unlikely to be usable for anything but dog food. And the tens of billions that we are pouring into the Argentinian peso is pretty much just setting that money on fire… some Trumpies are calling it an investment in Argentina’s future that will be paid back in spades; but they are conveniently ignoring the fact that Argentina has defaulted on its debt three times since 2000. THREE TIMES! And its economy is teetering on the brink of insolvency as we speak.

Of course we all know that increasing the number of cattle imports will do nothing for consumer prices since the big 4 processors are already importing enough to meet demand and then some. They are just colluding on pricing to keep with inflation as they will just lower the cost of their inputs with more imports.

I’m a bit confused here, so perhaps someone can educate me. I live near a lot of these cattle farms, and these farmers are getting top dollar per pound right now for their beef. They aren’t sitting around looking for people to buy their cattle. So the reason that importing the beef hurts them is because it has the potential to lower the price of these cattle, so their margins get tighter?
I understand how little there is to make in the profession currently. I do a lot of work for these guys, and they aren’t rich by any means. However, Beef prices in the US are crazy, and if importing beef would bring those prices down for consumers, then I can at least see a reason for it beyond “Trump hates farmers”.
