Elections have consequences. Do it. It’s absurd a majority can’t pass what they want. Insulating Americans from poor choices does nobody any good. Insulating the parties from having to deliver on their commitments does nobody any good either.

Many of the Republican Senators were in office when they were in the minority. They remeber that the filibuster is one of the few tools they have when they are in the minority.
Since Republicans will eventually be in the minority again they won’t want to lose that.
Trump is only concerned with Trump and doesn’t give a shit about the Senate. Senators know that.

The filibuster is an abomination, for once Trump is right. Republican Senators don’t want to repeal it because they don’t want to be forced to vote on tough issues. It’s one thing to vote for someting incredibly unpopular (but popular with small hyperpartisan base) when you know it has 0 chance of becoming law.
Aggravating_Egg8343 on
Lol the only reason they haven’t is because they *know* the loss of ACA subsidies is wildly unpopular, but if they nuke the filibuster, they can’t blame it on Democrats. This will not happen.

So theoretically if the democrats get the majority next year they would still have to be bipartisan to get things done and shutdowns could still happen if trump vetos every bill?

Lmao, of all the options Republicans have this is the worst one for them so of course he would pick that.
>Trump went on to argue that Democrats would eliminate the filibuster if given the opportunity to enact policies like statehood for Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.
Obviously not since they were in power during the last Congress and they did not do it.
Eliminating the filibuster would:
* Draw attention to the fact that Republicans are adamantly against affordable healthcare for the American people.
* Destroy two tools they’ve used against Democrats time and time again; the filibuster and the ability to hold budgets over Democrats’ heads.
I mean, by all means do it if you want, but be prepared for the reckoning when Democrats have a simple majority again. Then Democrats should have an easy time passing their agenda when they inevitably regain power.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the filibuster isn’t a constitutional feature as I understand it; however, I don’t think there’s _any_ professionalism & serious, informed debate in Congress. The whole system is fucked by greed and ideology creep, so now the filibuster shackles shitty policy and progress alike. And nobody wants to fix it because it’ll hurt them 50% of the time, so we just move horizontally instead of forward. If the House were properly representative of the population, and we had mandatory voting, that would at least restore some of the checks and balances of Congress, but the fact that we’re moving in the opposite direction, to open gerrymandering, feels like we’re watching the system fall apart.

Can’t blame it on the Democrats after this shit. Kicking millions off of healthcare, destroying the department of education, NIH, NSF, CDC, and USAID all while raising the national debt by trillions for corporate welfare programs and a fascist police force. If there are free and fair elections in the future this bill will be political suicide as it will literally kill Americans.

I think what is important to remember is that the Republicans have boxed themselves in a corner, have supported the legality of this president, as well as destroyed democracy, they are in such a bad position that they have the incentive not to have elections at this point because they know they will be held accountable. Now this is the scary part.

You know, in a way, this absolutely undercuts Mike Johnson’s whole “we don’t have control over the government bullcrap.” And you know, there is kind of a silver lining in that Trump has maybe inadvertently boxed Senate Republicans into a corner. Either they actually do what the Democrats want and extend the Health Care subsidies from Obamacare or they get rid of the Filibuster. Two things that people actually like, which is a problem for Senate Republicans given that they are grossly and pathologically allergic to doing things that voters who aren’t part of a cult actually like. Plus, if they actually did get rid of the filibuster, then everything bad that happens going forward up to the midterms is entirely on them. Nobody in their right mind would blame anyone other than the MAGA people who control Congress and the Presidency.
Which of course is why they’re trying to rig the midterms as hard as possible. Gerrymandering being one of the prime examples, alongside voter intimidation of course. I personally am glad to have voted very early on in favor of Prop 50.
