  1. From the article:

Senate Republicans nixed an attempt by Democrats to fully fund Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on Monday after those monies dried up over the weekend amid the government shutdown.

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) attempted to pass a resolution via unanimous consent on Wednesday that would fund the program amid the shutdown, which is on the verge of becoming the longest in U.S. history. Specifically, his measure would have forced the Department of Agriculture to fund SNAP benefits for the month of November to the tune of $8 billion.

The Oregon Democrat pitched his measure while being flanked by a green placard that read: “Trump is weaponizing food for the sake of MAHA,” an acronym for “Make America Hungry Again.”

“This isn’t lawmaking. It’s a political stunt by the Democrats. The resolution (that democrats are) offering is empty,” Said Republican Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming. “It is meaningless.”

No, John. It’s food for the hungry.

America is a sad, empty shell of what it once was. Considering the many flaws America had before, I feel this says a lot.

  4. Republicans want to their voters to go hungry and die, all so that the extremely rich can get a little richer.

Democrats are trying to prevent that, but we don’t see Republican voters protesting in the streets. They’d rather lay down than stand up.

  5. in a perfect world after the full on mask off bs they are pulling the GOP would never be in power again after this

  6. You can’t feed these people! We’re trying to make them riot so we can deploy the military against them!

  7. Their cartoonosh levels of villainy continue to astound me.

What do you mean you want your voterbase (because lets face it, its a LOT of republican voters) to starve????

Republicans right now are the biggest pieces of shit and the reason America fucking sucks

  9. The Republican party is actively traitorous. Every Republican in Congress and the SC (and the letter agencies, and the upper echelons of the military, and so on) is aiding and abetting an organized coup against the US Government. They are collaborating with foreign powers, and are outright attacking the American people physically, psychologically, financially, spiritually, sexually, medically, and ecologically. They are doing this on purpose, they are aware of it, and they are openly lying with nearly every breath. They are kidnapping your neighbors, they are stealing children, they are trafficking adults and children, drugging them, beating them, and doing God knows what else to their bodies. Their actions are illegal, unConstitutional, and unGodly. This will not quietly go away. They do not have a moral floor. They are willing to destroy the nation and the world beyond. They expect not to face consequences for their actions.

We The People are going to have to get creative.

  10. If folks don’t want to read the article (it’s really not very long), it sort of boils down to this – feeding hungry people is now a political issue. The wealthiest country on the planet, where the president can rape and pillage at will, all while building $300 million gilded ballrooms and hosting Gatsby Halloween parties can’t decide whether or not it’s right or wrong to not starve its citizens.

    That’s all.

  11. Am I reading this right?

Congress voted to set aside billions of dollars in emergency funds for SNAP, in cases like a government shutdown. The USDA has this money.

The USDA first said they’d use the money if they had to, but ~~Trump~~ *probably Russ Vought* is disallowing USDA to use the funds, leaving one in eight households — most of whom have children — without food assistance.

So democrats sue to force the USDA to use funds as directed by Congress, and Judge John J. McConnell *and* Judge Indira Talwani agree and [orders Trump to use the money by Wednesday the 5th of November](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/01/us/politics/trump-food-stamp-payments.html).

Trump-but-probably-actually-Vought says, Okay, we’ll use *a little bit* of the money. But it [might take us weeks](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/03/us/politics/snap-food-stamps-trump.html) to do it.

So Senator Jeff Merkley (D) says, Let’s have Congress to unanimously direct USDA to release the SNAP emergency funds as directed.

And John Barrasso (R) says go fuck yourself.

All because Republicans are refusing any and all negotiation with the minority party, and Dems are drawing a line in the sand over their budget killing the ACA healthcare subsidies? On top of their rescission bills and work requirements for Medicaid?

Did I get all that? Is that correct?

  12. It’s pretty messed up that food assistance is being used as a bargaining chip in a shutdown fight. SNAP isn’t some luxury program — it’s how millions of families put food on the table. Blocking funding just to score political points says a lot about where priorities are right now.
