1891 to be precise, five years before William Jennings Bryan began to transform the Democratic Party from the “pro-slavery/states right” party of the South, into a more progressive worker’s party. They didn’t start voting for Republicans until the party had begun to be captured by the Robber Barons of the gilded age.
So by some measures, he may be the most liberal person this district has elected…ever.

Maybe it’s because I’m fairly new to paying attention to local election stuff, but does anyone else find this stuff weird?
Are they just areas dems abandoned, potentially because they feel like they’re not worth their time/feel like they’d never flip them in a billion years?
Or are they areas where dems HAVE tried and nothing budged until yet another once in a lifetime event happens?
Headline after headline of this area hasn’t been democrat controlled since XXXX.
