‘Absolutely Pathetic’: Senate Democrats Denounced for Caving to GOP in Shutdown Fight: “Let’s be clear — this proposal isn’t a compromise, it’s a capitulation,” said one progressive lawmaker in the US House.
‘Absolutely Pathetic’: Senate Democrats Denounced for Caving to GOP in Shutdown Fight: “Let’s be clear — this proposal isn’t a compromise, it’s a capitulation,” said one progressive lawmaker in the US House.
The Democrat Senators who voted for this should be removed from the party. They have abandoned Americans
Silent-Resort-3076 on
Snippet:
* Fury on the progressive left and among lawmakers who opposed such “capitulation” to the Republican Party erupted overnight after a handful of Senate Democrats joined with their GOP counterparts in a procedural vote on Sunday night to end the government shutdown without gaining any meaningful concessions.
* With the support of eight members of the Democratic caucus—Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, Dick Durbin of Illinois, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Tim Kaine of Virginia, Angus King of Maine, Jacky Rosen of Nevada, and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire—Republicans in the upper chamber secured the necessary 60 votes needed to pass a cloture vote that paves the way for a deal critics warn does nothing to save Americans from soaring healthcare premiums unleashed due to the GOP spending bill passed earlier this year and signed into law by President Donald Trump.
* “It is thoroughly disappointing that, while most Americans overwhelmingly oppose Republicans’ horrific budget, support the fight to curtail Trump’s authoritarianism, and want to protect healthcare, some Democrats failed to hold the line, and squandered an opportunity to score a popular and decisive win for the American people,” said Lisa Gilbert, co-director of the progressive watchdog group Public Citizen.
* The deal will combine three separate funding measures into a single stopgap bill that will reopen the government and keep it funded through the end of January of 2026, but contains no restoration of Medicaid funding, fails to curb Trump rescissions that have devastated government agencies and programs, and does nothing to address Affordable Care Act subsidies other than a “meaningless” promised vote to extend them within 40 days—a vote nearly sure to fail in the Senate and likely not even taken up in the US House, controlled by Republicans.
* “What the election showed is that the American people want us to stand up to Trumpism—to his war against working people, to his authoritarianism. That is what people wanted, but tonight that is not what happened.” —Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)

The clear and obvious solution is ranked choice voting which is why both Republicans and establishment Democrats have fought against it.

The interwebs were running overtime about the awfulness of this potential deal by Sunday afternoon, so it is not like it snuck up on anyone. It’s a shame all these concerned House members had no free time to make strong public stances *yesterday*.

Scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds.
Anyone who says that instantly gets downvoted, but I don’t think a lot of people truly understands what that means.
By conceding the sole leverage you have to the GOP and acting as if the GOP is going to allow a vote on ACA subsidies next month (and acting like it would pass even if it did happen) you are gaslighting the American people by acting like the GOP are good faith, honest partners in government that can be trusted.
You are siding with fascists.

THis shows me that it was never about healthcare, it was about getting a vote to use healthcare as a platform for getting reelected. Even with all the momentum in the world, massive victories less than a week ago, the American public got sold out once again.

1. It’s great to be in a political party where we’re allowed to disagree openly and honestly and passionately with our leaders, without fear of compromise or being shunned. So hooray for real freedom and liberty in the Democratic Party.
2. People were suffering and will continue to suffer – this doesn’t solve anything and this administration is making all the same mistakes it did last time, but last time it had the coattails of Barack Obama. This time, it’s disastrous policies from 2017 onwards that saddled Joe Biden are once again being implemented, and they’re failing hard. People are still going to suffer, we all are, and it’s a disgrace.
3. It was clear the Republicans want to ruin lives by crippling Americans with medical debt. So it is. Their obsession with harming everyone financially knows no bounds, so make no mistake – hard times are here, and more hard times are coming. Trump continues to look like an fool claiming things are fine or better, the reality is hitting the cult.
4. Given how long this went, to a historical length, there was no winning here. It had evolved into who’s losing what the most. The Republicans are losing big time. Democrats made their point, and when people are crippled by medical debt there will be no stopping the Democrats. I know the vote will either not happen, destroying all credibility of Johnson, or will just fail, harming Americans who need help the most. The cruelty of the Republican Party knows no bounds, so buckle up – we’ll need to help our friends and neighbors, or ask for help.
Hard times are coming, thank the Republican Party.

Democrats were going to get relief from the first circuit on the SNAP stay. That would make capitulation harder to justify. Curious how they didn’t wait to confirm they would get the leverage.

Republicans could now look like heroes and vote to extend the ACA, while blaming any future Economic woes on the shutdown. I hate the Democrats.

Three capitulations in less than 6 months: BBB, honoring Charlie Kirk, and the shutdown to save healthcare and food stamps.
I’ve never seen a more ineffectual opposition party in modern politics than the American Democrats.

No one excels at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory like democrats. “Oh did we absolutely eviscerate republicans last week in the most recent election? Well can’t happen. We gotta let republicans make sure poor people can’t have healthcare anymore now.”

Illinois should be doubly insulted! They not only have had to deal with ICE, but Durbin just stabbed then in the back as well.
Leave it to the dems to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I would rather have more of “Let’s be clear; these fuckers are cowards and bitches.” Followed by hissing noises whenever they come into a room or speak before Congress. Hell, crash their press conferences with vulgar language catcalls. “Fetterman, you’re a bitch” has a nice ring to it.

You know what this reminds me of? The George Floyd and Lockdown protests.
People have already forgotten but briefly we as a nation were razor thin close to full class consciousness. There was talk of more protests in NYC, PHL, DC, LA, etc. and talk of a huge march on Washington for police brutality and women’s rights. It was supposed to happen, then NYC suddenly called RTO and every major city after, then lockdown suddenly ended. Then the movement and energy died completely.
This is the same thing. The American people are close to a full meltdown and reaction. Closing of airports, collapse of SNAP, furloughed fed workers, all would’ve ignited a class awakening, but ohhhhh nooooo! We can’t have that! So we need to shut it all down. Dissipate all the anger and tension, redirect the narratives so everyone forgets, and the news cycle points to a shiny new distraction for the people.
