  1. From USA TODAY:

The eight Democratic defectors who joined Republicans to reopen the government are facing widespread criticism from within their party for supporting a deal that does not guarantee the extension of expiring health care subsidies.

New Jersey Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill, who was one of Democrats’ biggest winners during last week’s off-year elections, accused her fellow Democrats in the Senate of “caving on a bill that the American people can’t afford.”

“Make no mistake, if this bill passes, it will lead to New Jerseyans paying far more for their healthcare, when they are already paying more and more for everything,” Sherrill, currently a four-term New Jersey congresswoman, said in a statement. “Making this deal is malpractice.”

For weeks, Senate Democrats refused to reopen the government unless legislation also included the extension of subsidies in the Affordable Care Act, which are set to expire at the end of the year and send premiums skyrocketing for millions of Americans.

But the deal reached with Republicans only ensures a vote during the second week of December on extending the subsidies. In addition to reopening the government through Jan. 30, the continuing resolution would also reverse recent cuts to the government workforce that President Donald Trump made during the shutdown.

“Pathetic,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom wrote in a one-word post on X.

The party is broken beyond repair

Consign them to the trash heap of history laid on top of the corpse of the Whig party

Chuck isn’t fit to lead. The party isn’t equipped to fight.

  3. Schumer’s loser “centrist” heels will not lose any committee assignments or otherwise be punished by the loser “centrist” heel leadership. The Senate Democrats need progressive leadership and that means primarying out loser “centrist” heels from the Senate and blocking more loser “centrist” heels from joining the Senate (Janet Mills):

    • John Fetterman (2028)
    • Tim Kaine (2030)
    • Jeanne Shaheen (Retiring)
    • Dick Durbin (Retiring)
    • Maggie Hassan (2028)
    • Catherine Cortez Masto (2028)
    • Jacky Rosen (2030)
    • Angus King (2030)

  4. Im frustrated, on one hand idk if Republicans would have ever advanced legislation that would extend ACA subsidies because they seem intent on killing it, let alone the house approving it or Trump signing it into law

So I understand the urgency to get the government running now to debate the ACA stuff till Jan 31st…BUT to label this anything other than a fat L for dems is hilariously dense because what was even the point? You might as well have just signed the clean CR initially and avoided the shutdown stigma and let R’s burn themselves voting it down later if you were just gonna fold anyways

Also to note the dems who voted to open the government? Are not up for re-election until 2028/2030 or retiring…very obviously planned out by schumer

  5. >Their decisions to relent on their health policy demands came after Democrats had a wildly successful off-year election last week that injected hope into the party ahead of the 2026 midterm races.

I think the CDC needs to fund a study to see if Fetterman’s stroke-based brain damage is somehow contagious.

  6. This might finally show that moderate/centrist/corporate democrats are just DINOs to average voters. Then most of the public will not learn of this till next week.

  7. Replace them all with progressive.

The whole “Vote blue no matter who” doesn’t work anymore. Because corpodems will side with republicans when it matters.

  8. How the fuck can anyone justify this?

Republicans fought the ACA extension to a 40 day shutdown.

How are you going to get them to vote on it in two months? This party is actually dead.

  9. To be a Republican right now. After all that, it’s the Dems getting laughed at as they peck and claw at each other

    tragic and funny

  10. MiddleAgedSponger on

8 Dems caved in favor of Trumps platform. They couldn’t get 2 Dems to cave in favor of voting rights or a minimum wage increase. I’m done with the Dems, they should start working on those Cheney voters.

  11. Prometheusf3ar on

Replace them with progressives, or socialists or whatever isn’t paid by corporate donors and will fight. Our current Dems are the worst, traitors the lot of them.

  12. curiousthoughts20 on

These Senators betrayed all the Americans who has been trsuting the Democrats to stand up for them. They are dispicible and I look forward to them all losing their next elections.

  13. tofumeatballcannon on

One good day. We had one good day. And then immediately after, we are reminded why this party cannot win with any regularity

  14. Prudent-Flamingo1679 on

Im sure our moderate friends will come yell at progressives about how this is all our faults again. Never doubt the moderates will side with the corporate class yet again.

  15. pillbox_purgatory on

“Now is not the time for infighting”

“Do not let the perfect be the enemy of the good”

    “Purity tests are not necessary”

    “Vote blue no matter who”

Words uttered by the sub for nearly a decade and now we have centralists dems that are all but MAGA minus the mean tweets and hat.

  16. Advanced_Radish3466 on

i wonder if they know, i know they don’t give a shit, how incredibly angry they have made their constituents and democrats across the country

  17. Lots of people downvoted me when I said Dems were going to fold a few days ago since it’s in their DNA. Fucking hate that I was right. Leave it to Dems to always snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

  18. my conspiracy is (and i havent read much beyond headlines fwiw) that dems did not think the 2025 elections would go THIS well, and they assumed a deal was gonna need to happen

and then the Dems crushed, it showed that there was no outside pressure coming to make a deal, so they got the votes needed (hence why we have old/retiring senators here, and no schumer or ossoff) to rip the band aid off because donors probably said the time is the time

  19. Intelligent_Read_697 on

Well this is why every non-American centric political scientist calls the US system a farce when people claim checks and balances ever existed in it….this wouldn’t happen in a parliamentary system or at least there is a counter built in

  20. DatabaseFickle9306 on

The anger at the centrists is palpable. They are now “our” MAGA minus the actual power. In fact they are losing power for themselves and more to the point for the people.

Held my nose for generations and voted for their ilk—from Dukakis to Hilary Clinton—because it was better than the alternative. Now?

  21. Mostest_Importantest on

Unless Americans show their displeasure on levels never before seen, it’s just business as usual.

    The suffering progresses.

  22. The amount of benefit of doubt I see given to congressional Democrats and DNC on this sub is outstanding.

    Please spin this one ya’ll.

The party DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU.

No matter what Rachel Maddow tells you, DNC only cares about corporate & multinational donors.

  23. So when you suggest primarying them you almost always get shouted down. But I’m going to say it again. We need to primary every Democrat. Let them justify their existence and let the voter decide if there tenure really makes a difference. If these were Republicans Trump would be demanding they be primaryed.

  24. Better_Dig_768 on

We know.. The DNC donors came calling like they always do when corporations are threatened.

  25. LuigiTheTweak_eth on

The only thing this deal has secured is the American public being reassured that the Filibuster must go. They held out 40 days to protect a parliamentary move that has outlived its usefulness.

  26. This one is astonishing. The only people this makes *any* sense to are the Dem senators. The “wtf, why did they blink when they were winning?” reactions are coming from all sorts of opinioneers who normally don’t agree with each other.

  27. Shumer needs to lose his leadership position tonight, everyone with Democratic or Independent Senator let them know we need this 👆

  28. A few of them are retiring after their term. Wonder how much of a payday they received for selling out.

  29. Mike_Pences_Mother on

So Mike “I don’t Know” Johnson is going to be forced to bring the House back into session. That means he has to swear in Adelita Grijalva.

  30. I don’t expect anything of Fetterman because he’s an enfeebled brain damaged simpleton at this point, but I don’t believe the other 7 are stupid enough to think for a second that republicans will vote yes on extending ACA subsidies after damn near 16 years of trying to kill it altogether. They hate their voters as much as republicans hate theirs, that’s why they put in damn near 0% effort in getting any actual concessions, just the barest of minimums to look like an opposition party. The Senate needs to be abolished altogether. It is arguably worse than the electoral college because it does more damage. Representatives should represent 30,000 to 40,000 people max. Just have a giant HOR and give all the senate’s responsibilities to them. It’s clear the senate has for the most part failed this country since about day one.

  31. Democrats vs Democrats is the goal

Republicans want to kill healthcare entirely

Fighting Dems who created the healthcare program in the first place is not a good use of our talents

We need to channel our energies to ensure a Dem-led Congress to stop the destruction of citizen programs and our democracy

  32. That’s the problem with the Dems. They care. Republicans don’t give a fuck if people can’t travel for the holidays, if American Citizens are being detained by ICE, if Americans have healthcare or for anything except their own party. They’ll straight up lie to the American people just so they stay in power.

  33. NetAlternative7706 on

What a surprise. The democrats are trying to lower democrat turnout at the next election. Guess I better vote third party again!

  34. No excusing and I don’t think they should have caved, but this shutdown was hurting real people and it has become clear(er) that Republicans were loving it because they’re huge pieces of shit.

I think some of those that caved could have been affected by the suffering because they have empathy.

Maybe they made the calculus that continuing a winning streak post-election wasn’t worth things like:
    – Continued reduction in federal workers
    – Folks working without pay
    – Skilled professionals quiting things like ATC
    – The coming famine for SNAP recipients (especially those in small towns where charity programs aren’t well funded – and before you say they voted for this – even the reddest counties see 20% blue votes

I would have kept it going for longer, but I can’t see the perspective where people getting hurt now sucks even if it might get better later. Like it takes a lot of say you’ll let people sacrifice for your vote.

Fuck Trump and his fascist Republicans for putting us in this Trolley Problem.

  35. They had to appease their corporate donors before travel disruption hurt the holiday season. Now is as good a time as ever to stop buying useless junk. All I want for Christmas is a new government.

  36. VanbyRiveronbucket on

I WANT THE NEXT SPEAKER TO CHAMPIONSHIP REMOVING CITIZENS UNITED… no one else need apply. THIS is the root cause to Oligarchs.

  37. The democratic party is a farce, it’s corporatist shills pretending opposition to string things along while the billionaire class finishes looting the country’s future from its children. 10-15 years, there won’t be anything left, they’ll steal the social security, they’ll steal the education dollars, they’ll get it all. George Carlin was right all the way back in the 90’s, this country was bought and sold a long time ago.

  38. aza-industries on

  39. MistahBrukshot13 on

It’s time for the DNC to clean house. Start with Schumers punk ass.

David Hogg had the right freaking idea smh. Primary every single one of these cowards.

End this stupid useless party and replace it with a Labor party.

Let the useless corpo dems and centrist idiots join the Republican camp they already dine in.

They show time and time again why they are not and never have been a legitimate curb to fascism. When you compromise with fascists, that just makes you a conservative and an accomplice.
