He’s obviously new to this. You’re supposed to start a crypto scam, and ask for donations to your inauguration and library and ballroom, then say you’ll donate your salary.
Asking for small donations sounds like something Bernie Sanders would do.

Isn’t this somewhat normal? I could definitely be wrong but I thought transition expenses were fairly normally covered by donations

The headline made me think this was a bad look, but this made me reconsider:
> Mamdani said most campaigns rely on wealthy donors to fund the transition, but “that’s not us.”
If this is true he needs to eliminate this corruption factory going forward.

Becoming a politician should not be this expensive, no wonder we have a bunch of corporate representatives in office

I just don’t understand why the campaign can’t pay for the transition. Why they have to be completely separate when they are directly related.

Out of curiosity, what would happen if nobody donated and the $4 million “couldn’t” be covered?

I wonder if he’d be able to set up a transition fund to alleviate this issue for future Mayors. I wonder why this isn’t standard practice already in all facets of politics.
Three_Froggy_Problem on
My islamophobic mom mentioned this to me the other day as if it was proof that he’s a con artist. The fact is that this is what it looks like trying to run a campaign/administration that doesn’t rely on massive corporate donations. The reason most politicians don’t ask explicitly for donations from voters to support their transition expenses is because it’s already covered by all the AIPAC money in their pockets.

By New York law he can’t use any campaign funds for this. So either he pays out of pocket or gets donations. So they attack him for not being so rich he can pay several people’s salaries out of his own pocket.

Zohran is such a dork. Everyone knows you’re supposed to create a sham cryptocurrency, and convince millions of your loyal, three-time voters to buy in then pull the rug out from under them, and distance yourself when they lose everything.
OR, he should’ve self-branded an inferior copycat product, and sold it at an exorbitant price with no refunds for unsatisfied buyers.

He’s literally following the NYC rules (see below). He’s also not simply taking $ from a few big donors, (and facing the inevitable “quid-pro-quo” that comes with cozing up to donors). Which I personally find quite refreshing and true to his campaign messaging.
3-801 Transition and inauguration donations and expenses.
1. **Candidates elected to the office of mayor**, public advocate, comptroller, borough president, or member of the city council **may authorize** one or more entities, other than a political committee, **for the purpose of accepting donations and loans, and for making expenditures, for transition or inauguration into office**. Such donations and loans may not be accepted and such expenditures may not be made on behalf of the candidate prior to the registration with the campaign finance board of each such entity. The campaign finance board shall promulgate rules to establish the time and manner for such registration.

It’s weird that this is news.
I live in New York City and I’ve actually been paying attention to local politics for quite a while. Every transition committee has to fundraise. The only reason this is notable is because real New Yorkers are donating and not a bunch of billionaires and businesses who are trying to ingratiate themselves with the administration and get lucrative contracts quickly. Generally, this is the time people are going to start winking and offering bribes in the form of transition funds.
I’m more than happy that these are coming in small amounts from many New Yorkers, but I really don’t think this is something candidates should have to do in the future.
