We need the money to give more taxpayer funded bennies to the ultra wealthy, the only people that matter in this country

  2. Redshirt_Welshy_Nooo on

Cuz they need all that tax revenue to fund multi-million dollar tax breaks for the couple hundred billionaires who they actually work for.

  3. >“Look, we can’t afford it. I wish we were in a position to return the American public their money, but we’re not,” Johnson told Fox Business’s Maria Bartiromo.

He literally just admitted on FOX that tariffs are in fact a TAX on Americans that we paid.

  4. The checks were a lie but Trumps golden ballroom definitely screams “Republicans Can Afford It!”

  5. But they can afford $40 billion to Argentina, $500,000 to eight senators, $230,000,*000* to Trump, and all the other shake-downs this regime is imposing on America.

RICO trials for the Republican Party.

***Edit:** Initially forgot three zeroes on Trump’s shakedown.*

It’s interesting how $2,000 direct relief is suddenly unaffordable, but tax breaks and subsidies for corporations never trigger the same concern. Budget priorities say a lot about who lawmakers think they work for.

  7. yeah, because we just gave like $3 trillion to billionaires and millionaires like a few months ago

The tariff checks are such a monumentally bad idea. Even two grand would be (at best) a couple month stopgap for people having difficulties. What people really want is wage gains and manageable inflation levels.

These stupid tariff checks would obliterate any chance for those latter two items. He just as well call them “The Executive Order to Enact Stagflation.”

We can afford to pay for their healthcare, vacations and any other perks they enjoy. Not to mention..
But where’s all the money from defunding all these federal agencies?

All their bank accounts have been getting higher and higher since January

  10. They also can’t afford SNAP or Medicaid. No money available unless it’s tax cuts for billionaires or funding for ICE raids.

  11. Seems like we have something in common, we can’t afford your tariffs…so, I guess the reasonable response is to rescind all tariffs effective immediately.

  12. Past_My_Subprime on

It’ll probably be a non-refundable tax credit, so that poor people won’t get anything.

  13. Significant_Cup_238 on

It’s bad policy, but we could afford it. Just have to stop cutting taxes for the ultra wealthy and and beefing up ICE to rival the Pentagon in cost.

  14. This was NEVER going to happen. Why anyone believes a word out of Trumps mouth is an idiot.

  15. But we can do $40 billion to Argentina, $780 billion to CEO’s in the PPP loans forgiven, $180 billion to Ukraine, and $20 billion to Israel.

  16. thequietthingsthat on

It’s just like how they could afford forgiving PPP loans for millionaires and billionaires but couldn’t afford 10k in student loan forgiveness

  17. What happened to the TRILLIONS in *pure profit* they’re claiming the government earned in tariffs so far?

Oh, right, none of it is real and the points don’t matter.

  18. >“Look, we can’t afford it. I wish we were in a position to return the American public their money, but we’re not,” Johnson told Fox Business’s Maria Bartiromo.

Or, you know, Ron Johnson could lead the charge in Congress letting the executive branch enact tariffs left and right, and there would be no reason to *return the American public their own money.*

  19. I had to pay $50 for a package I received from a private seller from Europe after it arrived. Thats AFTER already paying for shipping. Customs sent me a bill for another $50 wtf. How can you not afford to send everyone a check if you raking in this much more money? $50 from just one random package. You’re taxing millions of packages so WHERE IS THE MONEY LEBOWSKI?!

  20. TemporalColdWarrior on

Look, I think the checks are stupid, but I’d clearly rather do checks than just give it out to corrupt con artists.

  21. But $150 billion for the Gestapo. If you vote Republican, you hate America and everyone in it. Including yourself.

  22. He’s right. We also couldn’t afford to make Trump tax cuts for the wealthy permanent. What happened there?

  23. But we can afford golden ballrooms, a arc de triumph, redoing a hardly used presidential golf course and four luxury airplanes now.

  24. reddogyellowcat on

I was skeptical before, but now I instinctively know that any “we can’t afford” line from Republicans (or dems) is complete utter BS. We can afford it. They just choose not to allocate money to anything that benefits the people. Don’t ever believe a Republican that says ”we can’t afford XYZ” because it is simply a matter of discretion and priority, and what they really mean is “that isn’t important to us or our agenda”

We are the richest nation in the world. We can afford anything we want to improve life domestically. These are not pie-in-the-sky ideas, free buses, healthcare, etc. Nope. They are real policies we could pass and anyone who tells you otherwise is a demon.

  25. Darth19Vader77 on

You can’t afford it? What the fuck did you do with the money you mother fuckers stole from us?

  26. truthovertribe on

Never forget for one second that Ron Johnson wants to end Social Security and Medicare.

We can slowly and relatively painlessly pay down our National debt by *gasp* taxing the wealthiest more Ron Johnson and company.

We will *never* pay down our debt with ever increasing tax cuts for the wealthiest.

We can start to eradicate our debt by curbing huge subsidies which have been enjoyed by big oil/gas and other mega-corps. Big oil/gas have *never* suffered a loss in their entire history. Why are we subsidizing oiligarchs again?

Why can’t we accomplish common sense policies which are beneficial to most Americans?

Because we keep electing representatives of the billionaires (both Dems and Republicans) and in the case of President Trump, Republican voters skipped the middle man puppet and enthroned a globalist billionaire directly. How efficient y’all, how clever my Republican friends.

  27. $2000 tariff checks are such a small amount of what Trump has grifted since being in office.

  28. No_usernames_left_25 on

The GOP is so poor with money they couldn’t afford $0.00 checks after just 11 months of Trump. The ink could bankrupt us.

  29. But somehow we can afford a $300MM ball room?

For fuck’s sake, just start over. Kick Trump out. Kick out the current Congressional leadership. Both sides. They are all driving this country in the wrong direction. Filling their pockets for retirement or their decedents. Lining their coffers. Some Senators clearly have no plans to ever leave office and appear to want to die of old age instead. What a disgrace.
