  1. *“… That is why we are supposed to use a clear-error standard of review—why we are supposed to uphold the District Court’s decision that race-based line-drawing occurred (even if we would have ruled differently) so long as it is plausible,“ she continued. ”Without so much as a word about that standard, this Court today announces that Texas may run next year’s elections with a map the District Court found to have violated all our oft-repeated strictures about the use of race in districting.”*

3 of the judges are bought and paid for by Trump.

Kagan, Brown Jackson, and Sotomayor are doing phenomenal work documenting their concerns for a future truth and reconciliation process. May they all, and all of us, live to see that day.

  3. The Texas Maps are either gonna not aid The GOP or will actively backfire, so SCOTUS isn’t really doing Them that much of a favor here.

  4. “My fellow justices are racists and corrupt beyond belief” would be a much more succinct dissent. They couldn’t care less about the law and decorum at this point, so why bother responding as if they did?

  5. Dissents are great and maybe make some of us feel better, but they don’t do or mean anything. We’re still effed.

Sound and fury, signifying nothing.  Only way this ever has any meaning will be if future administrations use this as evidence as part of impeachment.

  7. The “supreme court” majority appears to be a racist, hateful, retributive group of retrumplican sycophants.

Well, at least we got “blistering dissent” in exchange for “fair elections”.

  9. Spend 5 minutes looking into Alito and tell me he doesn’t believe in fascism. I’m being 100% serious. I very very very much believe he’s a fascist.

  10. I haven’t read the article but I can say with comfortable certainty that this is a tokenistic worthless gesture.

    Want to know why?

Because they used the word “blistering”.

It’s a calculated media choice. They use superlatives to offer a false sense of security that there’s any resistance to authoritarianism.

It’s always “Left wing opinion piece issues scathing/blistering/devastating blow against a right wing actions (but is ultimately ends up being just that, an opinion, and has no effect on any political outcomes and is entirely impotent against the destruction of democracy we are witnessing in real time)”

Meanwhile it’s “Trump/republican-controlled-congress/Supreme Court actively dismantled constitutional protections against forced-labour/human rights abuses/child prostitution, dismantling 24 separate statutes, 187 legal precedents, renaming the bill of rights to ‘pay trumps bill if you want rights’, and simultaneously removed all legal barriers to for-profit concentration camps for kids. They made fun of disabled people while doing so, and they will all face exactly zero legal or political consequences for their actions. When asked about it by a female reporter they offered an immediately disproveable lie, blamed Biden, and said ‘calm down sugar-tits, go back to the kitchen’. Not one person in attendance called them out on this, and Trump will do it all again tomorrow”.

  11. Congress has the ability to impeach and remove the president AND Supreme Court justices. That’s their power to “check” the other branches in our checks and balances system.

These next midterms really will decide the fate of the country.

  12. One constitutional law course will make it clear to most observers that the entire way the Supreme Court operates is utter bullshit. Add some paid-for political “justices” into the mix and you get the entirely illegitimate entity that we have today.

Pack the court. You can’t damage that which is already wholly broken.

  13. Liberals, Democrats, and progressives have the moral victory locked down pat. Too bad we can’t secure any actual victories, but man do we hold the intellectual high ground.

RBG was the queen of holding the moral high ground while sacrificing every lever of power.

  14. America is dead. Great idea. Destroyed by MAGA. Redistricted maps seem like taxation without representation. Can I stop paying taxes until we outlaw redistricting?

  16. its really insane how lower courts will do trials and long processes to assess the case before them, and SCOTUS will just yolo throw those rulings out in like 2 days.

  17. Oooph it’s BLISTERING, that’s awesome! And also absolutely useless.
Can blue states use the same redistricting bullshit and come out even in the end?
