Momentum Is Building for Medicare for All: As private health insurers jack up premiums for tens of millions, a majority of Americans now want Medicare for All — even if it entails eliminating private health insurers and raising taxes.

It’s exactly what the country needs, so naturally we can never have it.
They didn’t have to eliminate private health insurers in Canada. There is no way that a government plan can cover every expense – there are limits to everything. Further, there are minimum standards of care that are covered by the government, but Hospitals don’t generally go beyond that.
For example, while living in Canada, one of my kids fractured an ankle. We had the choice of a plaster cast (free) or a walking boot ($150). The supplemental insurance provided by my employer covered the walking boot.
“Free” hospital rooms are wards (4+ to a room). Semi-private rooms (2 to a room) cost extra. Again, semi-private was covered by my employer plan.
Dental. Prescriptions. Vision. There will still be lots for private insurance to do beyond universal coverage.
As a physician gotta say easier to work with medicare/medicaid + drug companies most of the time than many private insurance for my field at least
If insurance premiums are eliminated, then the tax increase wouldn’t even be noticed by the average American.
Your increased taxes will be cheaper than a for-profit health insurer will ever charge you
Insurance does not lower costs or increase access. It exists only to generate capital for share holders and CEOs.
With many countries that have socialized medicine, the quality is so low that everyone who can afford to gets private healthcare.
It shouldn’t raise taxes. What the worker would currently pay into Medicare and private insurance would go to their health insurance
Kill all private health insurance
It’s time for change. This failed private health insurance healthcare system must end even if we need to pay more in taxes.
It takes a LOT of taxes to exceed what we already pay for insurance. Remove the middleman and everyone gets to benefit
Note to all the “it’ll never happen”.
100yrs ago, that was child labor, work safety, civil rights, marriage equality, EPA, financial regulations, social security, etc
It CAN happen if there’s a massive enough vote for it
Here in Australia we have a dual system. Everyone gets free healthcare, but there’s also private insurance if you can afford it and you want a faster and higher level of service.
Jacobin based in reality as always, just not our reality
Hell yes and make sure the people asking for your vote listen hard about this too
Burn it all!
“ even if it means eliminating private health insurers” it frames that like anybody fucking likes these roaches lmao
“even if” it ends private insurance ❌
Especially because it ends private insurance ✅
I know jacobin can be trusted here ofc, but it’s an important distinction. We want good care. Insurance isn’t care. It’s a middleman that exists for no reason.
Our best path to making it happen is more achievable than others realize, and it’s following the way Canada achieved it — starting small. It took one province doing it, then more, then boom.
In multiple blue states there are plans to get that ball rolling. That’s how it starts. When OR, NY, CA, and who knows who else has solved the problem, it’ll be a challenge to not roll it out at a wider scale.
America is a third world country in a Gucci belt. Our taxes line the pockets of the rich and don’t benefit the working & middle classes in any way.
Raising taxes….. they are paying for insurance that may or may not cover them. Its negligible the difference for actual guaranteed medical security.
