Almost one in 10 Mamdani voters were also Trump voters, study finds: Plenty of New Yorkers who voted for Zohran Mamdani in last month’s City Hall election previously backed Donald Trump at the ballot box, despite their obvious political differences, new data reveals

  1. Many people who voted for Trump did it for his promises of affordability. Mamdani ran on, among other things, affordability.

One of them now calls it a hoax, the other one is still committed to it. We’ll see how that changes the brain chemistry of the voters.

Having lived in Texas for a while now, I’ve learned that most Trumpers are tired of a broken system and want against the grain anti-establishment candidates. Mamdani is 100% that. I would imagine a progressive leftist if ran for president would probably get a lot of former Trump voters. If they’d win is anyone guess, but seeing a small fraction of Trump voters go Mamdani’s way is not surprising.

Yes and? Trump ran on a lot on the “life is expensive and it’s all due to the current establishment” in 2016 and 2024, do you know how universal that feeling is? This is not a difficult topic to understand, unless you’re earning passive income

Not obvious to MAGA people. Hell, “It’s going to cost more.” isn’t connected to “I will have less money.” to them.

I mean, that makes sense when you remember how many people have no idea what’s happening and are politically illiterate. It’s not a big percentage.

It’s almost like people are desperate to follow someone who can fix the mess we are in.

  7. I think it only indicates that the lowest-information voters still know shit costs too much and voted on that impulse.

  8. Many blue collar workers also voted for Trump.

Mamdani and Bernie both know the not so secret way to win is going all in on labor.

  9. Some people just want change and don’t investigate any deeper than that. Both were agents of change though obviously in completely different directions. I truly hope that Mamdani has some success with his plans so people can see that we can in fact serve the people better than our politicians do today.

  10. AOC also found she had overlap.
It’s not complicated: one was using it as propaganda to get elected, the other claims it as a moral platform.

While no one who voted for Trump can ever be trusted, it’s not surprising that he’s turning some people off

This isn’t very surprising at all. Voters make decisions based on short term interests like cost of living, and many people at first glance might see both Trump and mamdani as “anti-establishment” candidates despite their different views on socialism. It’s the same reason that Bernie Sanders had some support from people who might otherwise vote republican: they see both democrats and republicans as corrupt and anti-worker.

  13. So you’re telling me people who voted for a populist in a suit voted for a populist in a suit. Shocking!

  14. It’s the “Vote for Pedro” strategy. Promise to make all their dreams come true. Although I think Mamdani is actually sincere.

    >One such person was Brooklynite Adalberto Rodriguez, 30, who told the broadcaster that, after feeling sympathy for Trump during his Manhattan criminal trial, he felt compelled to back his return to the White House. He subsequently became excited by Mamdani’s campaign for City Hall.

    >“I pray for these two guys specifically,” Rodriguez said. “And that’s pretty much the first time in my life I’ve ever had such a level of excitement towards any politician.

    These people are fucking idiots.

  16. This really shows the nuance in voter behavior. Just because someone backed Trump doesn’t mean they can’t swing for a progressive candidate locally, it’s about issues that hit home, not national party loyalty.

  17. It looks like the headline isn’t correct. It’s not 1 in 10 Mamdani voters voted for Trump. It’s 1 in 10 Trump voters voted for Mamdani.

  18. I have been saying it for the last 10 years. Obama won on change, Trump won on change, biden won on change, Trump won again on change.

People hate the American status quo and they want radical change.

  19. Regardless of their specific politics, they are both populists making promises that people like but are hard to keep.

They both ran on populist campaigns that encouraged the working class in ways the traditional parties have not.

People say it’s “vibes” but this is a well known political strategy.

Pretty sure examining Obama campaign people may find similar results. In fact I know some older Obama/Trump voters

  21. It’s almost like elections are just popularity contests based on personality and not policy.

A political “American Idol” if you will.
