‘A Chilling Assertion’: Trump Officials Falsely Claim Citizens Must Carry Immigration Docs to Prove Their Status: “There is no legal requirement that US citizens carry papers or have proof of their citizenship on them,” said an attorney at the ACLU of Northern California.

Various Snippets: (Also, **WHAT was the point** of requiring a REAL ID??!!) 🙄

    * Federal law enforcement agencies are detaining US citizens who do not carry proof of their citizenship in what civil rights advocates describe as a flagrant violation of constitutional rights—and a top Trump administration official is claiming the government has the authority to do so.
    * A Somali-born Minnesota man was alarmed by the practice last Tuesday when immigration agents tackled him, handcuffed him, and arrested him, refusing to accept his REAL ID as proof of his legal residence in a video that was widely circulated on social media.
    * The man, who identified only as Mubashir, was placed into a chokehold and forced to his knees in the snow on his way to get food in Minneapolis’ Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, which has a large Somali population.
    * *Drove him 7 miles away before releasing him alone into Minnesota snow storm—told him to “walk home” in freezing weather advisory.*
    * Only after fingerprinting him at the detention facility in Fort Snelling did someone check his ID.
    * But as backlash rolled in from the video of Mubashir’s arrest, the man leading Trump’s mass deportation crusade, US Border Patrol Commander-at-Large Gregory Bovino, seemed to falsely suggest via social media that citizens are required to carry proof of their citizenship.
    * “One must carry immigration documents as per the INA. A REAL ID is not an immigration document,” he wrote in response to a post about Mubashir’s arrest, which noted his citizenship.
    * Jeremy Konyndyk, the president of Refugees International, responded that *“in no way does the INA require citizens to carry immigration documents”* and that Bovino is “just letting his jackboot thugs presumptively detain whomever they like.”

As if that pesky thing about being against the law or not a written requirement will stop his admin from telling his Gestapo thugs to demand papers from anyone that looks at them sideways.

1984 called, they want their dystopia back. Seriously, requiring citizens to always carry docs feels like the first chapter of a very bad sci-fi novel. Slippery slope, anyone?

  4. “Papers please.”

And they’re not “falsely claim”ing it. They’re claiming it. It’s wrong but they’re making the claim.

  5. RepulsiveLoquat418 on

ice agents have probably been practicing saying “papers please” in a german accent since they were kids.

Proper documents won’t even help when due process has been abandoned. They’ll just throw them in the trash, toss you in a hole, & then lie about the whole thing.

  7. So we’re at the ‘papers please’ stage. You know, ICE wouldn’t mistakenly arrest Americans if immigrants were forced to wear some sort of symbol on their clothing….

  8. If I burn my ID and SSN to go live in the woods, will the Constitution protect me from search and seizure?

Apparently not. We need someone to take the fall and argue this all the way to the Supreme Court. Our nation wasn’t founded on carrying IDs. Lacking one shouldn’t be probable cause for arrest.

  9. That video was distressing. I always go into total passive mode when confronted by law enforcement. Any resistance or any arguing with them leads to bad outcomes even for white people of obvious anglo descent. Stay calm, then call an attorney, the media, and the ACLU, when you get a chance and sue them if they have violated your rights. This is not intended to excuse this egregious behavior on the part of law enforcement. It’s just how you cope with a type of person that is triggered by resistance to their authority. While it is true you might end up in detention or worse even if you comply peacefully, fighting back won’t help anything and might get you beaten or killed. To all citizens: get out the vote to the last person in the next elections and clean house of the scoundrels and criminals that create the policies that incentivize these abuses. We have a competitive authoritarian democracy forming, but we can still take it back. But time is running out.

  10. For those not old enough to remember, there was a time in the 1980s-90s when the subject of a national ID was hotly debated. The Republicans were VERY much against it, saying it smacked of fascism. They compared it to a gun registry and said it would allow the federal government to round up their enemies. It led to the formation of the Tea Party, the forerunner of MAGA. Times have changed.

  11. Genuine question, how would that actually look in practice?

We are all told the driver’s license is the go to identification method. But now it seems to not be enough despite it clearly identifying immigrants / green card holders with a specific mark on it. So now we are assuming ICE literally is illiterate?

Because the alternative is passports, which the average American does not have (and the requirement will only apply to certain skin colors as we know).

The other alternative makes less sense since the social security card must be kept safely at home or a bank since it is a flimsy piece of paper and is issued to green card holders.

    So just more Republican nonsense.

Adding my other comment here as well:

True but how are you supposed to identify yourself if not by drivers license. It literally is the Real ID thing that was pushed and now is suddenly not good enough?

I know we are talking about constantly moving the goal post, so it should be challenged again and again.

  12. This is one of the major reasons the colonies went to war with Britain. The stamp act was wildly unpopular, because it allowed British authorities to inspect whatever they wrote for sedition. They enshrined this right with the 4th amendment.

  13. Or, counterpoint here, stop just grabbing people that look a certain way or raiding places randomly?

  14. Hydroxychloroquinoa on

The left: “this is literally fascism”

The right: “stop your harmful rhetoric”

The left: “It’s not rhetorical though”

  15. Like what “immigration documents” are US-born citizens supposed to carry? Our birth certificates???

  16. Those on the Right tend to confuse “patriotism” with “self-whiteous, hypocritical egomania.” As a matter of fact, their delusions of infinitely superior patriotism represent the very best evidence of the “White Entitlement” they deny even exists! They obliviously believe that they are the only ones “entitled” to live in and govern this country . . . when they stole the entire continent from Native Americans!

  17. Remember when maga was comparing voluntary covid passports to the Nazis requiring people to show their papers?

  18. I seem to remember ICE ignoring the documents if anyone they wanted to detain had them. I recall one ICE goon on video saying RealID didn’t mean anything and could be faked.

First person to ask me for my papers is going to get a fucking earful. I will then promptly be shot, I imagine.
