Regardless of whether the $18T is factual (it is not, of course), he hasn’t “taken in” anything. The tariffs have been paid by US importers and citizens through higher prices on imported goods and any good with imported content (virtually all goods). That’s a bit like saying, “we took in $xx from our new consumption tax on the American consumer!” When did conservatives start bragging about raising taxes? Tariffs are one case where “big lie” theory doesn’t work. Everyone knows that we are paying the tariffs, not the countries of export origin.
