Preface this comment with I am a progressive who votes D. I have absolutely no love for Trump or the current DOE.
THAT SAID, this is the dumbest thing ever. Trump didn’t make that decision. Nursing students have never been considered as being in a “professional” program for financial aid purposes. Ever. Not since the Higher Education Act of 1965. They were often lumped into the language, but — as someone who works in higher ed in financial aid — they have never, EVER been considered for the additional loan money afforded to doctoral level medical programs like MD, DDS, etc.
Also, as someone very plugged into cost of attendance throughout this country, if you require more than $157,500 between undergrad and grad to finish your nursing degree, even your DNP, you are either 1) going to a school who is ripping you off (more than tuition is already a rip off) or 2) repeating classes at an ungodly rate that tells me you should not be anywhere near sick/ailing humans. There is ZERO reason it should cost you more than 100k, especially since you will likely never make the money to pay those loans back — which is another problem of course.

He’s going to need a nurse someday and the only thing available will be a robot with a chip on it’s shoulder.

Wait until there are serious shortages of nurses. There may already be some issues with hiring nurses now (not an expert or knowledgeable).
Just like we saw Idaho where they had trouble getting resident doctors to come, Im sure the same will happen with nurses. Not going to get better and they need to realize that their actions are harming their people. Have real consequences

Their solution to healthcare is that they want to let the free market bring down the cost of healthcare. That idea is already completely misguided since healthcare cannot function in a free market, but then they also want to make it harder for people to get in to the medical profession, which would reduce supply and raise costs.

And we’ve already had a nursing shortage for…god knows how long? The forced shortage of nursing schools was always a stupid profiteering-over-sense move. Remember when everyone was talking about the nursing generational bomb and how screwed we are as the boomer nurses get back problems, have to retire, etc.?

What is the reasoning behind reducing loans for nursing students. I thought we had a shortage of nurses?
