  1. Yep. Sussan Ley is such a joke of an opposition leader, most days she speaks and news reports on it I can’t even tell if it’s satire or real. Most of the time it’s real.

If she’s still opposition leader by the time of the next election, Albo will make history and jump into an even higher majority of 3 figures (100+ seats) and I simply cannot wait for such a historical moment 😍

  2. I didnt like the pile-on when she took the leadership, this is far better – her own words and deeds being her reason for failing.

  3. A lot of opposition leaders feel a need to constantly criticise the government on literally everything, and eventually tie themselves in knots over it. This is what happened here.

Ley called for “immediate action” without really considering what was needed, and now is criticising the govt for rushing legislation. She is right on the second count, the legislation is bad legislation, but having called for action, it will look silly for her to now be opposed to it.

She missed a real opportunity politicising Bondi.

I’m mean I’m not the target audience but her leadership being diminished seems hardly possible. The party is moribund and a way out of the hole seems unlikely.

Bullshit. Pretty sure it’s impossible to loose something you didn’t have to begin with.

    One or two sentences.

She did it with one word.

The only single reason she has less credibility in that party is because she’s a woman

Sussan Ley is a huge part of the problem and illustration of why the LNP is where it is these days. She’s the type of politician that has been around for 25 years but most people had no idea who she was until she became the Opposition Leader. The fact that Sussan Ley had a swing of -8.7% in her own seat says it all. She’s got progressively worse over time and stands for nothing.

    Well done Angus! Top Work!

The fundamental misjudgement by Ley here was to immediately politicise the terrorist attack. Oppositions usually are very careful to avoid doing this, with the normal approach being to support the immediate government response while looking for areas to make criticisms once the crisis period has passed. Albanese did this very effectively during the 2019-20 bushfires and the pandemic, for instance.

By attacking the government from the outset, with this getting considerable traction in the media Ley dealt herself into the response. As she doesn’t seem to have any constructive input to offer and is, very unwisely, seeking to block the actions the government wants to take, this has blown up in her face.

Albo doesn’t come across as looking good in the response and the aftermath of Bondi. But the one thing he did do was to make sure that Ley and the Coalition didn’t score any wins from it either.

The Coalition’s divides were briefly sidelined, and one could argue the royal commission capitulation was a win by the Liberals. But now they look like hypocrites in opposing the government’s bill when they wanted Parliament recalled ASAP and hate speech laws passed. If they oppose gun laws or if the Nationals opened their mouths on it, which they did, it made them look even more out of touch with wider Australia.

  11. It’s amazing that the AFR published an article that was even remotely critical of her.

It’s been awash with one-eyed opinion pieces on this topic. Zero journalistic integrity or balance.

  12. The LNP have pulled defeat from the jaws of victory? Or maybe it was just the media who said that they had won the political battle over the repercussions of the tragedy at Bondi? I reckon it was the latter.

  13. This position looks a bit divided into what it actually stands for. From an outsider opposition

It is same thing as Turnbull. The moderate leader bends over to the will of right of their party so that they can remain in leadership only to be fucked over the right any way at the first opportunity.
