Not commenting on this case…but juries and grand juries are extremely distrustful of anything related to trump, ice, and dhs. so there’s tons of jury nulification going on, tons of “no bill” at grand juries, and tons of not-guilties after just 30 minutes of deliberation. The multiple anecdotal examples in my personal life match with the reporting I’ve read, making this a very real and widespread phenomena.

least this mechanism of founders’ intent is still alive and defending what little democracy still exists

  2. Anyone in the Trump organization or/and ICE is going to have a hard time convincing juries to take their side. Juries are going to be sympathetic to those that are just pissed off about what’s going on. Who else do you think they try to get judge Canon for everything?

  3. They prosecuted this guy based on a private Snapchat conversation with his brother and apparently a very, very bad friend. I would have voted not guilty after 5 minutes of deliberations.

*At the heart of the government’s case are Snapchat messages sent from Espinoza Martinez to his younger brother and a friend who turned out to be a government informant. One read in part “10k if u take him down,” along with a picture of* [*Gregory Bovino*](https://www.nbcnews.com/video/greg-bovino-seen-throwing-gas-at-protestors-in-minneapolis-256362565524)*, a Border Patrol official who has led aggressive crackdowns nationwide, including last year in the Chicago area.*

Original AP headline was: [Jury finds Chicago man not guilty of circulating $10K bounty on life of top Border Patrol leader](https://apnews.com/article/immigration-arrests-murder-bounty-chicago-trial-bf73aa9f3f0b5478e199a38b09311364).

Two of the most damning parts:

    > Federal prosecutors initially referred to Espinoza Martinez as a “ranking member” of the Latin Kings, but their lack of evidence led U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow to bar testimony on the Chicago street gang at trial. According to the criminal complaint, Espinoza Martinez allegedly sent messages on behalf of the gang to other gang members.

    > [Defense attorney Dena] Singer poked holes in the government’s case, including in the testimony of their first witness Adrian Jimenez.

    > The 44-year-old owns a construction company and had been in touch with Espinoza Martinez over Snapchat about work. Unknown to Espinoza Martinez, he had also worked as a paid government informant over the years after serving a prison sentence for a felony. He shared the Snapchats with a federal investigator.

So the feds really threw a Caleb Williams interception by basing this case on a jailhouse snitch.

  5. $10k? That reminds me of some Dr Evil shit. As a juror, I would find this ridiculous, and would need some solid evidence to back this bullshit up.

Trump related civil lawsuits and Trump DOJ criminal charges tend to fail in courts. But there seems to be some jury nullification going on these days. It’s pleasing but probably not good law.

  7. He was always going to be not guilty. They knew when they decided to prosecute.

They just wanted 2 weeks where Fox News could run headlines like:

“Man charged with putting bounty on ICE leader.”
“Chicago Man on trial for soliciting Bovinos murder.”
    “Trial begins for…”

They know their viewers wont look into it closely to see how weak the case was and they can drum up some sympathy.
