Would this incentivize datacenters to produce some of the electricity themselves? Solar panels on roof buildings seems like a no brainer.

Every one of these AI data center needs to come with it’s own power plant. Either it joins with a wind farm or solar farm or battery storage facility… something. The population can’t be subjected to rolling brownouts because these things take the power of a small city.

These data centres will just spike electricity costs for everyone else.
Sometimes they get a special rate and the utility makes up for it on everyone else’s bill.
And not to mention the amount of water these datacentres consume.

This is similar to what Quebec did for crypto miners – they were flocking to Quebec because it has the lowest cost electricity in North America, which the grid couldn’t handle. To solve the problem, they put crypto operations in a 500 MW allocation block. Once that block was full, any new miners had to pay a much higher rate for electricity.
