The Australian national anthem is already sung at most NT schools. So, what is the new mandate really about?

    It’s not nationalistic, militaristic or religious unlike other countries’ anthems so I fully support this mandate. Hopefully other states and territories adopt it.

    Australia’s anthem is the only English-lyric anthem in the world that doesn’t mention either religion or militarism. I’d say it’s the most progressive anthem in the Western world. The lyrics focus on Australia’s geography, astronomy, inclusivity and unity. There is nothing to be afraid of. In fact the second verse’s wordings directly fly in the face of what the extreme far-right want.

    >Speaking on Sky News on Wednesday, Ms Hersey said singing the anthem in English was important for remote, bilingual Aboriginal schools in order for students to learn English and be able to one day get a job.

    Every job interview I’ve had has required me to rely on my knowledge of both verses of the anthem.
    High unemployment in remote communities **must be** caused by them not singing it in English every assembly. /s

    You have to hand it to the CLP, that’s a creative excuse to deflect from “it’s culture war BS” accusations.

  4. I mean I had to sing the Australian anthem at school in QLD in the 80’s and it didn’t prevent me from being an “unaustralian” radical leftie so I’m not sure what they think it’s going to achieve.

  5. I reckon if One Nation ever get into power not only will they play the national anthem each day at school they will create a national pledge of allegiance that all students need to recite before the start of each day 😂

  6. The second verse is pretty woke. They’d of probably gone for 1 verse if they’d ever learnt the second. Unless they mean the second verse from the 1879 version?

    “When gallant Cook from Albion sail’d,
    To trace wide oceans o’er,
    True British courage bore him on,
    Til he landed on our shore.
    Then here he raised Old England’s flag,
    The standard of the brave;
    “With all her faults we love her still”
    “Britannia rules the wave.”
    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    Advance, Australia fair.”
