  1. Every part of this is a deliberate misreading of history and the sum total is a whitewash of Trump and an insult to everyone struggling to preserve American liberalism.

Let’s take it piece by piece.

  2. It’s too late for subtlety. The letter was great, I wish he would have directly called out Trumps authoritarian actions.

Or that time he did an illegal war and got hundreds of thousands of people killed. I think that was slightly worse than not being mean enough to Trump. But at least he laid out a framework for Trump to follow for when he invades Iran.

  4. People remember that during the time of W Bush he was called a dictator, authoritarian, destroying civil liberties, ignoring the constitution and international laws etc. Right?

Let’s not let them get away with making him the “silly lovable uncle”

  5. His administration literally laid the groundwork for our current authoritarian. He inherited a budget surplus. The last surplus ever. W can fuck right off.

  6. Both are pieces of shit, but not all pieces of shit are equally shitty. Trump is definitely way more putrid

george bush pretending he’s above it all is laughable.
he built the surveillance state and endless wars that paved the way.
now he gets to play elder statesman? nah.

I can’t completely agree with the title but what he said was waaay too subtle for what’s going on.

Just because Trump is a worse person doesn’t make Bush great. Fuck Bush I still hate him

Dumb puppet of more devious men. He probably would’ve ended up owning a landscape business or coaching a high school baseball team if his father wasn’t president.

  12. Bush was just as bad as Trump policywise, let’s not forget. He just did it without being gross.

Family Guy is the only show to depict the fact that he left for 8 months following the 9/11 attacks. Not directly because of them, but he just up, went to Texas (Crawford ranch he bought with his campaign money no one wants to admit) and HID. (The same crawford ranch he… gave a warm tour to Vladimir Putin in 2022). I remember it happening as a kid, but no where and no one has seemingly kept that in his documentaries. Even now if you try to search for it, either it gives you fluff pieces or lies about him traveling for previous commitments (after a terrorist attack you keep your tea parties?) Family Guy made a 10 second bit and it keeps me sane because they were rewriting history as it was unfolding, erasing his pisspoor behavior. Instead of a Mandela effect where i question my sanity, i have a clip that says “Yes it did happen.”

    Separately:

Just like that recount in his brother’s state “magically” had the votes for him (Which never sat right with 13 yo me) we have trump, on tape, multiple times demanding they “find his votes”? To me is a round about admission Republicans have never won an election fairly.

My parents are conservative, kept bashing Gore and Kerry. Yet at 13 I remember watching the week’s of voting issues just for his brother to “find missing votes”? No. Even if saw through that.

  14. Republican Party didn’t start their drive toward authoritarianism until after GWB. Conservatives have been at it since at least the Civil War.

We’re literally in this situation because of Bush. HE CREATED DHS. HE CREATED ICE. HE CREATED THE PATRIOT ACT. HE WORKED WITH THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION. FUCK BUSH.

Bush was a tool. A useful idiot who was easily manipulated and controlled. Don’t give him more credit than he was due. He served his purpose for the elite. Also he didn’t do things out of malice. Incompetence? Sure. In general, he’s not as bright as people thought. He’s an average moron who just happened to be the perfect pick for GOP control.

  17. He nominated Samuel Alito, arguably the most evil and far right judge on the bench and that’s saying something, to the Supreme Court. He’s not some silly old guy who paints. He’s tactically evil and knew exactly what he was doing nominating Alito and sending thousands of American troops to die in the Middle East.

If I was a war criminal who was also responsible for the 2nd worst economic disaster in American history, then I’d probably just STFU

  19. His administration dragged us into wars where the war protests were to be held in fenced in areas.

Bush is a major reason why we’re in this mess; the Patriot act has done inmeasurable harm to this country

  21. Keep in mind, Bush was the one that authorized banks being saved with taxpayer money in backroom deals during the 2008 recession. 2008 was supposed to be the financial reset and they delayed it with that act.

Bush is just as bad as all the rest of the GOP right now. In fact, I would be inclined to say that Bush was our first warning that shit was hitting the fan after citizens united and is what led to where we are now.

  22. I’m sure the Reagan GOP thinks, “Well we didn’t want this!”

The pitting of people v people is their doing; especially on single issue voting. It’s the only way to keep the status quo.

It just shows how much of an idiot he really is.

  23. JVL is a stellar writer – if you haven’t checked out the Bulwark, I’d suggest checking it out. Former Republicans who left the party as soon as Trump was elected.

  24. And let’s not forget that he hasn’t thrown shade at Trump. He keeps his fuckin mouth shut and lets his ‘party’ get away with murder.

  25. rocksoffjagger on

EXACTLY! And, worse, the precidents he set in office, and legislation he got passed like the Patriot Act, or the creation of ICE in response to 9/11 is exactly how we got to where we are now. Without Bush, there would be no Trump.

Every US president is the Hight authority in the world. So! What do we do about authoritarianism??
