But they introduced politics into it immediately with Patel in the locker room celebration, which he and MAGA amplified. They looked past Trump’s comments about the women achieving the same result, did little to defend their fellow athletes, and the speed with which they were shown at the State of the Union speaks to a willingess to be used politically, or at least an incredible naivete. I don’t think there was ever a chance of the men’s team meeting the moment. For one, it was known before the games even started that certain members of the team were full MAGA. For two, we’re talking about a group of (largely) white men who grew up able to afford a ridiculously expensive sport and have been singularly focused on hockey and insulated from the realities of the world since at LEAST age 13. Wishcasting that this exact thing wasn’t going to happen because it was the biggest international hockey game in most people’s conscious lifetime was foolish.

I’m not saying the take is wrong, but let’s create some context. You’ve got a bunch of young people with little-to-no formal education due to their pursuit of a professional hockey career. In their public facing moment (interviews), Hughes in particular did well enough to make the gold medal about America in his interview–inserted zero partisan politics. In the moments prior, they did some wonderful things to honor a fallen teammate, bringing out the guy’s kids to become part of the gold medal photo. So far, incredible work. Meeting the moment.
On the phone, they’re talking to the President of the Free World. The head of the FBI is somehow there. They just got an invite to the White House and the State of the Union. And in the middle of those incredible, once/very rare-in-a-lifetime things, the President says a monstrous, dumb thing. You’ve just won the gold medal, you’re getting drunk–and then what? You don’t get swept up in all that and reflexively laugh? Under different, calmer circumstances, I think you would’ve found a more muted response.
