That said, let’s start by reminding people that the Trump administration is responsible for deporting veterans, for massive VA workforce reductions and funding gaps, and operational disruptions that have led to things like cancelled contracts, program slowdowns and delayed delivery of care/claims.
Trump and house Republicans also backed a CR that zeroed out funding for the Toxic Exposure Fund (TEF), which covers healthcare costs for troops exposed to toxic substances like burn pits.
The Department of Veteran Affairs was one of many agencies hit hard by Trump’s layoffs. VA employees stated that they received a notice that said:
> “You have not demonstrated that your further employment at the Agency would be in the public interest.”
Thousands of veterans/VA staff members were laid off thanks to Trump
VA layoffs included nurses, doctors, mental health professionals and claims processors, meaning longer wait times for Veterans, significantly reduced outreach, processing backlogs, less access to benefits, and even interruptions in medical screenings.
These cuts also put veterans’ medical care at risk by disrupting life saving cancer clinical trials; by limiting their access to care, and by ending treatment oversight.
VA cuts and hiring freezes have also disrupted mental health services for our veterans; including the laying off of Crisis Line staff who offer suicide‑prevention resources to many that rely on it.
Trump has also canceled contracts for programs supporting homeless veterans.
He ended the mortgage assistance program that helped save tens of thousands of veterans’ homes.
Then there’s his so-called “warrior dividend” checks that were sent out to some active duty service members in the amount of $1776. An obvious publicity gimmick.
These funds came from an already‑approved housing allowance supplement for veterans.
In other words, the money was just redirected and rebranded in a move that can be best described as a political stunt; an effort to sell a narrative to the public.
Sadly, that’s all this administration is good for—stunts, grifts and gimmicks that exist to address one problem and one problem only: Trump’s declining approval ratings. This is their M.O. of course.
Trump and his allies often try to disguise their promotional efforts as massive accomplishments, choosing short-term, gratuitous, often deceptive and marketable “fixes” instead of solutions that address the deeper, more systemic problems.
Also, it’s become clear now that Trump was only making the rounds and speaking to troops in public recently to “boost morale” before the upcoming war with Iran. Another PR strategy.
**TRUMP HAS REPEATEDLY DISRESPECTED OUR VETERANS.**
Instances that include, but are not limited to:
Like when he referred to veterans killed in action as “suckers” and “losers” and refused to visit a cemetery where American soldiers are buried because it was “filled with losers.”
When he said of John McCain’s time as a POW, “I prefer people who weren’t captured;” offending prisoners of war.
Or when he downplayed traumatic brain injuries that dozens of military personnel suffered from in Iraq as a direct result of his provocations in the Middle East.
When he angered veterans by minimizing the significance of the Medal of Honor.
Or the many other times he’s publicly and privately insulted our distinguished military leaders.
Don’t forget how under the false guise of “eliminating DEI,” Trump’s “Department of War” fired high ranking, black and female military officials with illustrious careers, only to replace them with far less qualified loyalists. So much for “merit” based hiring.
There’s also his highly disrespectful and controversial behavior at the Arlington National cemetery during the most recent election campaign.
Trump was so desperate for a photo op that him and his campaign staff violated long standing rules meant to honor and respect fallen soldiers and their families. They even got into a physical and verbal altercation with cemetery staff, and all for the sake of politicizing a national shrine.
Donald Trump doesn’t care about veterans, he only cares about himself, his ratings, his public image, and of course, his growing fortunes. Everything else is performative.
