I’m glad the article referred to Piers Morgan as a right-winger. I’m so sick of these fake “centrists” like Piers pretending they do some super rational nuanced political analysis, when in reality they just spout off conservative talking points 99% of the time, mixing in 1% of “I disavow how Trump says mean things sometimes.”

If you’re gonna be a sycophant, fine, all the other conservatives are these days. Just stop pretending to be something else.

I mean, if it bothers them they could stop doing all this terrorist stuff like murdering children and covering up a massive child sex trafficking ring run by the president and blowing up random speedboats and kidnapping heads of states and running concentration camps and murdering random civilians in the streets and threatening to invade countries and funding genocides.

Are they wrong?

It’s late stage imperialism, frankly. Power without wisdom leads to impunity, and then disaster. Over-extension, internal instability, failure to grasp that power that is exercised foolishly can destroy its own foundations.

Great powers can be wise, they can recognise that their power is contingent on buy-in, and that if they act too selfishly, too destructively, too antagonistically, they will erode the foundations of that power. But they rarely stay wise forever.

Most empires eventually rot from within and then over-extend, and because those in charge have forgotten that power is not innate, and that it can and will abandon you in your hubris, they go further than they should.

Then others realise that the hegemon is over, and that’s when it really falls apart. When everyone collectively realises that the emperor has no clothes. Because part of what power is, is acceptance, expectation, belief. Like a currency, it works in part because people accept and assume that it does.

In fact everything is like that. Laws work because most people accept that they do, and should, and will. Wealth is honoured because people accept that it will be, and should be enforced.

Almost nothing in human life is ‘real’ unless it is continuously reified. That’s why people made a big deal of Carney’s speech, of course, because while the world still has to negotiate the turbulent waters of American power, it was a sign that everyone was increasingly aware that this era is ending.
