  1. Have Republicans even read the SAVE Act that the president so desperately wants to pass?

  2. NonPoliticalAcct3646 on

I don’t think Republicans are capable of learning that something is bad until it directly affects them.

  3. Megaphonestory on

I bet there is quite a few poor Republican States where next to nobody has a passport.

  4. The vast majority of the public believes that voter ID is a common sense requirement.

The GOP knows that it won’t pass. But they want to use the Dems’ refusal to justify Republican claims that Dems want fraud.

What Dems should do is propose adding provisions that the GOP will hate.

Require that the government issue free passports on demand to everyone. That should include providing the photos at no charge.

State and local government should be required to provide all of the supporting paperwork at no charge to the citizen. The feds will need to pay for them.

Transportation should be provided to those who need the help.

    And so on.

The Republicans will balk at all of that. The Dems can then attack the GOP for its lack of common sense.

Show what it costs to get the ID, and call it the Trump Voting Tax. That’s on top of all of the other Trump taxes that we’re being hit with. Now would be a good time to talk about Trump’s Iran gas tax on top of the Trump Voting Tax.

For all the Chuds insisting that most Americans “agree” with the SAVE act:

    >After thanking Cornyn for his question, Durbin explained that the voter ID requirements of the bill are not satisfied by a driver’s license, but only a passport. “Fifty percent of Americans do not have a passport. Those who want to obtain it so they can vote will pay $186 and wait three or four weeks for that to happen,” Durbin said. “Secondly, you can use a birth certificate, but any person who has changed their name as a result of a marriage … has to find not only their birth certificate, but some correction of it to prove that they are eligible to register to vote.

I guarantee most Americans do not know these details about this fascist attempt to disenfranchise voters.

  6. The most hilarious thing about the whole bill is I truly think it will hurt republicans more than democrats.  Educated people, immigrants, urban residents-all more likely to have a passport than Jethro and his wife in rural North Carolina

  7. WaterFriendsIV on

You have to explain it in a way that affects them. Tell him many YOUNG, liberal women voters don’t change their last names when, or if, they get legally married because it’s “woke” to keep your own name. They probably won’t have any trouble voting. But many, if not most, of the OLDER women voters have taken their husband’s last names because they’re more traditionally “conservative”. Those older voters might not be able to vote in the election. Ruh roh.

  8. Didn’t Cornyn just flip and say he was going to support the SAVE act a couple days ago?

  9. latchkey_adult on

The most important thing is to explain to supporters of this bill that a driver’s license will NOT be enough to satisfy the voter requirements to prove citizenship. A passport costs nearly $200 and takes a month (also it’s a hidden tax). You can use a birth certificate, but if you changed your name as a result of a marriage you need to have a birth certificate AND some correction of it to prove that you are eligible to register to vote. SHARE THIS INFO. Even Democrats who think this bill is no big deal are ignorant to the facts.

  10. > “It’s estimated that nine percent of the voters in America do not have the identification required by this bill. It means that, ultimately, those people will not be voting. And I think that is the ultimate goal of this administration,” Durbin continued. This was news to Cornyn, who asked if these concerns could be addressed by the amendment process. Durbin responded, “When’s the last time we amended a bill?”

Sen. Cornyn really didn’t know this basic fact about a bill he’s been pushing for (and that he’s willing to bypass the filibuster for)?

  11. Misleading headline. He did not “learn why it’s bad” because he does not see deliberately blocking eligible voters from voting for the express purpose of suppressing votes and stealing the elections (all of them) as a bad thing.

    Edit typo

  12. Crafty_Ish1973 on

Beyond the identification requirements for voter ID, the SAVE Act requires that states turn over all their voter rolls to the Department of Homeland Security on an ongoing basis AND requires frequent voter roll purges.

Republicans want the freedom to unilaterally disenfranchise millions at will so they can never lose. We can’t allow that to happen.

  13. The only way this works is if every citizen is mailed a specific voter ID card when they turn 18 or are already 18+, they’re easy and free to replace if lost every year, and every state accepts them when registering to vote. There, done. Oh, but they don’t want that do they? They want to make you pay $$ for this for a passport or a certified copy of your birth certificate, neither are free, AND IS A FUCKING POLL TAX. Make passports free for all citizens and we can talk.

  14. Clean-Elk9831 on

“Those things could all be addressed by amendments, right?”

So you agree that the bill is in poor form?

  15. GestureArtist on

Americans would require a passport to vote? They would have to PAY for the passport? So they have to PAY to vote?

This is as un-American as you can fucking get.

It’s a voter tax or Poll tax. It’s a pay to play scheme.

*Poll taxes were fees required to vote in U.S. federal elections, primarily used in the South to disenfranchise African Americans and poor voters, EBSCO. They were banned in federal elections by the 24th Amendment in 1964 and declared unconstitutional in state elections by the Supreme Court in 1966*

  16. These GOP politicians never read the bills they are voting for. They blindly and stupidly believe everything Trump tells than. They can’t believe that Trump would lie to them. What idiots!!

Try just getting online access to your Social Security account. In order to validate your identity for access through [Login.gov](http://Login.gov) or [www.id.me](http://www.id.me), you need to not only upload the required valid picture ID, you need to have a cell phone, and your cell phone number needs to match one of those associated with you name in the public record. The alternative is to upload more verification documents, and then have a fairly lengthy video conference. The whole process is quite lengthy (a few hours) and could be near impossible for folks with limited technical skill.

The biggest surprise for me is that the system won’t allow you to present your documents in person at a participating US Post Office unless your cell phone number matches one with your name in the public record. The automated system also doesn’t explain why your cell phone number failed the verification test; you need to hear that from a live customer representative.

  18. RobsterCrawSoup on

Once you need a document that you can only get from the federal government, the politicians in control of then federal government can pick its voters.

  19. Fluid_Anywhere_7015 on

Fucking conservatives and their bullshit poll taxes. Make EVERY FORM OF ID FREE.

  20. last-recording-22 on

Passport has to be “valid” which means not expired. They are renewed every 10 years, $130 currently and that amount is not set in stone.
The amendment also demands in person registration and in person changes. If you move to a new house across town you must register in person again. If you are “accidentally“ purged from voter rolls you have to re register in person. The act required the federal government to receive regularly updated states voter rolls every quarter. How easy would it be to combine ALL of the data the government now has ( legally and illegally obtained) along with voter rolls including a persons voting history, use AI and analytics to purge specific people from voter rolls . A few here a bunch there, oops. No rules in place for oversight or consequences there.
No DEI so too bad for those wheelchair bound voters, voters who don’t drive, voters who can’t get to their “local”government building between 9-5 weekdays to register. Who don’t have money to get or renew their passport. To take off to go apply for their passport.

  21. Non citizens are not voting in US elections. It is simply not an issue. Its not today nor was it in 2020 or anytime before that. Trump is lying about the issue like he always does. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a complete fool.

The SAVE Act will make it harder for citizens to vote though. So if you want that i guess vote for it.

  22. yrotsihfoedisgnorw on

Cornyn saying those requirements are things that could be amended after passage says pretty much all you need to know about where he stands. He was clear yesterday – he wants to win his election and will do anything for trump’s endorsement.

THE SAVE ACT IT ISNT A VOTER ID BILL!!

IT ALLOWS DHS TO PURGE STATE VOTER ROLLS.

The SAVE Act amends the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) to require states to submit their entire voter registration lists to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at least every 30 days.

While the bill uses the phrase “on an ongoing basis” for general maintenance which includes removal of “suspected non citizens”, the specific 30-day mandate refers to the required data-sharing and verification process with federal agencies, who will take over normal voter removal processes, and allows the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT UNDER DHS TO REMOVE VOTER FROM STATE ROLLS for being *suspected* of being a non citizen, forcing them to re-register, in person, with NO 90 day quiet period before an election.

This information is hidden in a hyperlink in THE SAVE act under the non citizen immigrant portion (which no one noticed because non citizens don’t vote)

    Edit: section 2
    (4) (A-D)
    (5) (A-E) (k-g) (1) (A-C)

    https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/22/text

If you follow the hyperlinks in these sections and cross reference them with the changes mentioned, which is horrific and mind numbing, it shows where DHS takes things over. There are only 5 states that have data bases that track citizenship at the state level (enhanced driver’s licenses) so all will have to be done at the fed level.

The program DHS uses is already being used in Texas and a hand full of other states voluntarily and the results are not good!!

I’m so sick and tired of this *rules for thee but not for me* bullshit. He was all about keeping the filibuster alive, talking a big game for years about how Republicans would regret blowing it up when they were no longer the majority, but suddenly now says “the SAVE Act is more important than the filibuster” and supports ending it because he wants an endorsement from that pedophilic, felonious, malignantly narcissistic, pathetic, dumbass motherfucker?

I wrote to Cornyn this morning to say how utterly ashamed he should feel, how embarrassed I am for him, and how relieved I am to have a passport with my married name so that no matter what happens, I know I’ll be able to vote against him in the midterms for being a traitor who is scared of losing his seat and knows his best shot at keeping it is to cheat. What a prick.
